Job Description:

The Classification Manager will play a critical role within Microchip’s Global Trade Compliance (GTC) group, leading the Classification Team and serving as a key member of the GTC leadership team. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of import and export classification for Microchip’s products, ensuring accurate assignment of Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes, Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs), and other regulatory classifications. The Classification Manager will drive the development and implementation of robust classification processes, support cross-functional teams, and maintain comprehensive classification records. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in global import/export classification, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record in managing compliance within a complex, fast-paced, and global business environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Classification Expertise: Serve as Microchip’s subject matter expert on import/export classification, including U.S. HTS, ECCN, Schedule B, and international tariff codes (EU, UK, ASEAN, etc.), ensuring accurate and consistent product classification across all business units.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of classification professionals, making risk-based decisions on behalf of the team when needed, while actively participating in the GTC team to foster a collaborative, high-performance environment and build strong working relationships across the department.
  • Classification Process Management: Develop, implement, and continuously improve procedures for product classification, including new product reviews, reclassification, and periodic audits to ensure ongoing compliance with global trade regulations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, product management, manufacturing, logistics, and sales teams to obtain technical data and product specifications necessary for accurate classification, and to embed best-in-class compliance practices across the organization.
  • Regulatory Monitoring and Training: Monitor and interpret changes in global classification regulations, collaborating with trade counsel as needed, updating company policies and procedures, and providing training to internal teams on classification requirements and best practices.
  • Process Optimization: Collaborate with IT teams to enhance and automate corporate systems and processes to improve classification efficiency and data integrity.
  • Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate classification records and supporting documentation in accordance with U.S. government and company requirements.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; advanced degree or certification in trade compliance is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in global trade compliance, with a focus on import/export classification.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in a trade compliance role.
  • Strong working knowledge of Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the Commerce Control List (CCL), with emphasis on Electronics and Encryption categories; International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the US Munitions List (USML); and related international trade laws.
  • Strong working knowledge of HTS, ECCN, Schedule B, and other international classification systems
  • Functional knowledge of classification and compliance applications (e.g., SNAP-R, USITC HTSUS) and ERP systems.
  • Familiarity with Commodity Classification Automated Tracking System (CCATS) drafting and submission, including Supplement No. 6 for encryption items.
  • Superior organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with experience managing a small team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in the semiconductor industry.
  • Knowledge of EU and ASEAN classification regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with logistics, particularly import regulations, export filing requirements, and international shipping procedures.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and experience with data visualization or analytics tools such as Tableau.

U.S. Export Controls Requirements: This job requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by the export laws of the United States. Candidates are required to provide proof of either US citizenship, Permanent US residency or classification as a protected individual as defined in 8 USC 1324b (a) (3).

Benefits of working at Microchip

The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in Colorado, is $65,000 - $165,000.*

*Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
