About the Department

Hiring range is negotiable between $42,495 and $55,239 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.

The purpose of this position is to provide technical work in the safe and compliant spraying and/or spreading of nutrients and pesticides on city parks, sports turf, golf course and other city properties. Ensure targeted areas receive the proper application rates of micro and macro nutrients and pesticides to reach the targeted levels of aesthetic and economic thresholds.
 
 This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.  This employee will track an evolving BMP that encompasses environmentally safe results and will be responsible for being compliant with all NCDA, OSHA, NCDNR and EPA regulations. This will include the tracking and logging of all RUP's and required labeling.


Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Maintains clean and safe operating equipment, which includes keeping the servicing up to date and all service records.
  • Operates all spray equipment to comply with all health and safety standards. 
  • Identifies pest control and schedules treatments throughout the year.  
  • Communicates with the athletics coordinators or assigned personnel at school facilities and City departments to schedule pest control applications. 
  • Calibrates and makes corrections to spray equipment to ensure a consistent product.
  • Collects soil, water and tissue samples for testing and evaluates results to make future applications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the laws prescribed on all levels concerning the proper use storage and handling of all pesticides having usefulness to turf grass, roadsides and aquatics.
  • Knowledge of turf and ornamentals (agriculture) as a whole and effects of pesticides in the environment.
  • Knowledge of the usage and importance of PPE.
  • Skill with equipment mechanical repair and preventative maintenance.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skillset that would enable the person as an operator to successfully drive, monitor gauges and surroundings to ensure a quality product free of void or overlap.
  • Skill in providing leadership and supervising work of Park Technicians, including planning, delegating and monitoring work.
  • Ability to respond with courtesy to citizens.
  • Ability to plan, obtain materials needed, and complete tasks on schedule.
  • Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, employees and citizens involved in sporting and recreational activities.
  • Ability to make sound judgments and to exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with the public.

Other Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades;  
  • Three (3) years of experience related to parks maintenance or grounds keeping, landscape maintenance, turf management, or related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Spray License.
  • Ability to obtain certification in CPR, AED and First Aid.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
 

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
 

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
