Provide RF communications engineering support to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) customer for one or more space missions. Scope includes RF communications and related electrical systems support for RF communications components and mission electrical systems throughout observatory, integration and test, launch, and early on-orbit operations. The incumbent will report to one or more GSFC project offices as well as collaborate with the Communications Systems Branch, which is the branch responsible for RF communications subsystems.
Responsibilities:- Provides electrical engineering expertise in the discipline area of RF communications at the mission level.
- Participates in broad mission-level planning, including by not limited to, spectrum management and utilization of existing network communication assets.
- Provides troubleshooting support for complex systems, as needed, to ensure test programs remain viable and successful.
- Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of numerous factors.
- Supports all observatory and mission level activities up to and through launch and on-orbit commissioning.
- Some travel may be required in support of flight test operations (up to 30%).
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- B.S. Degree, minimum, in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 30 years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge and expertise in RF communication systems, subsystems, and components for spaceflight.
- Knowledge of NASA Space Communication Assets including the Deep Space
Network (DSN), Space Network (SN) and Near-Earth Network (NEN).
- Ability to perform communication system hardware analysis; hardware includes antennas, transponders, filters, cables, etc.
- Possesses detailed understanding of end-to-end communication link budget analyses.
- Ability to perform engineering trade studies.
- Understanding of NASA near-earth modulation and demodulation schemes.
Desired Skills:
- An understanding of the CCSDS documents relating to the NASA Communication and Data Handling Subsystems.
- Experience with launch site operations and standard procedures.
- Demonstrates sound judgement in selection of methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
- Shares ideas and experiences with others, solicits feedback and asks relevant questions.
- Has effective problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
