The Director of Credit Control has a hands-on role that requires a leader who will develop and manage an internal team to support the following areas: collections, credit and a variety of technical initiatives related to the above.  The role carries the overall management responsibility for the accounts receivable inventory of the firm.  The right candidate will be able to adapt to a changing environment and develop a high performing team. Ideal candidate will be in Clayton (St. Louis), Denver or Kansas City, but open to other locations in a state/jurisdiction wherein we practice.

The scope of the role requires strong leadership, process management, interpersonal, decision-making, delegation and high-level communication skills. The Director of Credit Control is the primary connection between the firm’s shareholders and its core collection cycle processes and will also play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and operations as the firm continues to enhance its finance function.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the firm's collections operations, including implementing strategies and assessing processes.
  • Develop a continuous improvement mindset and culture to seek new ways to improve efficiency, accuracy and responsiveness while ensuring the organizational ability to deal with individual, special situations.
  • Oversee, lead, and motivate a team across several offices, ensuring adequate resourcing, training, and development.
  • Provide challenging "stretch" assignments to those who are ready and devote appropriate time to individuals who need help in reaching their potential.
  • Work effectively with direct reports to provide guidance/coaching through real-time feedback during the course of day-to-day interactions as well as assist with longer term career aspirations; complete review process in a thoughtful and timely manner, ensure development plans are in place to monitor staff make appropriate progress against stated developmental goals, monitor difficult performance situations and work with Director of Revenue to take appropriate action.
  • Set directions and mobilize the entire department to meet common, clearly defined goals. Use knowledge of team members’ strengths and weaknesses to provide appropriate mix of autonomy and control to achieve strong results while also allowing for development of skills.
  • Partner with attorneys and practice leaders to develop client-specific collection strategies.
  • Collaborate with all Finance & Accounting teams to strengthen the client financial lifecycle.
  • Provide firm leadership with detailed reporting on receivables status, cash flow projections, trends and collections performance.
  • Leverage financial systems and data analytics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of collections or receivables management experience, with at least 5 in a leadership role. (Preferably within a large law firm or professional services environment)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills. Assertive, proactive, and professional; ability to handle difficult situations with diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, strong critical thinking, and ability to spot problem areas and propose solutions.
  • Detailed operational/functional knowledge of a large LLP or partnership.
  • Proven track record in improving collections performance in a partnership-driven setting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing interests effectively.
  • Experience with legal financial systems (Elite 3E, Aderant, or equivalent).
  • 15% travel may be required.

 

The budgeted salary range for this position is $180,000 - $200,000.
