About the Department

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is seeking motivated and reliable individuals to join our team.  This recruitment will be used to establish an 18-month eligibility list to fill current and future Police Assistant vacancies in the Tucson area.

Maintains the security and safety of people and property on the State Capitol mall.  Performs related duties as assigned.  This is a competitive classification.

Position Duties

1. Screens visitors and packages entering State buildings.
2. Answers questions and provides information to the public.
3. Monitors security cameras located around the capitol mall.
4. Patrols buildings and premises.
5. Issues parking warnings on vehicles which are in violation of State statutes.
6. Guards against trespassing or damage to property.
7. Opens or closes State buildings as needed.
8. Provides special event security coverage and traffic assistance.
9. Responds to calls for assistance (e.g., escorts, elevator issues, civil standbys, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. record keeping.

2. the use of two-way radios.
3. security procedures.

SKILL IN:
1. dealing with the public.
2. dealing with confrontational situations.
3. written and verbal communications.
4. security observation.

ABILITY TO:
1. exercise independent judgment.
2. recognize emergency and hazardous situations.
3. complete accurate traffic citations; keep records of parking enforcement activities.
4. acquire a working knowledge of state and parliamentary statutes, policies, and procedures.
5. learn state government facility layouts and locations.
6. interact with people who are confused, angry, and/or openly hostile to ensure security and decorum.

Other Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; must be a citizen of the United States; and have a minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience involving public contact. 
 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have and maintain a valid Arizona driver license.
Will be required to operate an x-ray machine and metal detectors.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Varying shifts and locations.  
May be physically demanding and occasionally hazardous.  
Requires lifting, repetitive hand and eye movement, and the use of a variety of office and police-related equipment.  
Will be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Progression to the next step requires an overall performance rating of at least "Standard" in the last 12 months.

Must successfully complete the examination process.
