POSITION SUMMARY:
The Academic Specialist is critical to Post University’s Center for Academic Success. Our Academic Specialists provide one-on-one support to all Post students throughout their academic program. We aim to engage first-year students to make them aware of their support system at the university and build supportive relationships with them that carry through to graduation. Each Academic Specialist monitors potential academic barriers related to their content area and then provides support or resources to help our students overcome them and succeed.
As this is a hybrid position, candidates must be available twice a week on our Waterbury campus. Occasional weekend availability may be required for campus events such as Commencement, New Student Weekend, and Orientation.
When working from home, candidates must plug their equipment into their home router (a 50-foot Ethernet cable will be provided by Post). No wireless connections are supported. The home internet minimum requirements are a 25 Mb download speed, a 15 Mb upload speed, and a ping rate of less than 60. The upload speed is essential for a consistent audio connection for the phone system. (Please use the link provided to test your home network speed www.speedtest.net.)
Whenever working remotely, the candidate's home network must meet the minimum required speed and follow the hardware connection settings determined by their provisioned equipment and department role. Additionally, candidates must have a reliable Internet connection and a designated and private home office or alternative workspace.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Provide timely support to students (mostly first-year students) in general college skills, including computer skills, time management, navigating the online learning environment, etc., via phone, email, and/or text.
Act as a “concierge” for the department by fielding incoming support requests and appropriately guiding them to the proper resources or personnel.
Work in conjunction with other Academic Specialists in the CAS to develop communication and outreach plans for supporting Post University students.
Collect and report data and metrics, analyzing outreach and student success outcomes.
Create and maintain academic resources to assist students in becoming successful.
Other relevant duties are considered necessary for this position and the betterment of the student experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
- Hold an associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree.
- Proficient in MS Products, including Microsoft Teams.
- Strong computer skills.
- Experience with online learning/learning management systems (LMS).
- Previous student support experience (admissions, advising, accounts/FA, etc.)
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Possess unquestionable integrity and work ethic.
- Has superior relationship-building skills with students and associates.
- Competent with computer systems and software.
- Able to work independently.
- Possess the flexibility to adapt to a changing and dynamic environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years in a customer/student service role.
- Experience advising college students.
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring in an online/hybrid environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This job is light manual work in nature. Some physical requirements include:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- At times, the candidate must be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Limited travel may be necessary.
