About the Department
Performs major and minor repair and replacement work on buses. Work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent and Senior Mechanic.
Position Duties
- Perform major and minor repair and replacement work;
- Perform selected repairs and replacement of diesel driven equipment;
- Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition and fuel systems, etc.;
- Repair, overhaul and main special equipment;
- Disassemble, repair and reassemble air compressor, pumps, and related equipment;
- Perform diversified electrical work on diesel equipment, such as installing batteries terminals, repair and adjusting lights, installing generators and starters;
- Service air conditioning systems for heavy diesel equipment;
- Maintain housekeeping standards set forth by Maintenance Superintendent;
- Promote safety in the work place; and
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in repairing heavy diesel equipment.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools, such as drills, grinders, micrometers, and welding equipment.
- Ability to diagnose more common defects in the motors and bodies of buses; to detect, by inspection, any worn or broken bus parts.
- Ability to interpret work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts.
- Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports.
- Ability to follow and execute oral and written instructions accurately.
Preferred Qualifications –
Must have one (1) year of experience in repairing automotive, heavy diesel or light power-driven equipment.
Other Qualifications
- Possession of a valid appropriate commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must be able to obtain passenger endorsement within 6 months of employment; failure to do so may result in termination.
- Must obtain a Type 2 Air Conditioning License within 6 months of employment; failure to do so may result in termination.
