Job Description:

Summary:

The Associate Director of Alumni Communications and Marketing supports the production of strategic high-quality, brand-consistent marketing communications that engage the University’s nearly 160,000 living alumni— with the goal of transforming them into an engaged community, including potential volunteers and donors, and to enhance the university’s reputation. The Associate Director reports to the Director of Advancement Communications to support the development, implementation, and management of overarching and segmented communications strategies and marketing plans to engage and inform alumni. This data-driven individual will design and implement communications and marketing plans to support various Alumni Relations programs and events.

In performing these activities under the direction of the Director of Advancement Communications, the Associate Director will manage the print collateral and online communication vehicles that the Office of Alumni Relations uses to communicate with alumni. This includes working closely with the Associate Director of Alumni and Digital Communications to manage the daily operation of e-mail communications (including e-mail blasts and ongoing newsletters) and determine best practices for email and web marketing. With partners in Advancement Communications and University Communications and Marketing, the Associate Director will develop and maintain alumni web site content, stay abreast of current and new marketing techniques and technologies, and build upon the programs that are in place to increase the engagement level of all alumni.

This position reports directly to the Director of Advancement Communications and supervises work-study students.

Essential Functions:

  • Communication and Marketing Strategy: The Associate Director, with all members of the Advancement Communications team, supports the development, implementation, and management of overarching and segmented communications strategies and marketing plans to engage and inform alumni through digital, print communications, and social media. This includes working with the Associate Director of Alumni and Digital Communications on policies and procedures to govern creation, distribution, and analysis of e-mail communications.  The Associate Director will utilize available metrics to build departmental reports and make strategic recommendations based on best practices.

  • Content Creation: Oversee the creation, implementation, and maintenance of web content designed to engage alumni and advance strategic goals. Serve as administrative liaison to university offices engaged in the revision and updates to AU’s Alumni Web site. Partner with the Assistant Director of Advancement Communications to create an integrated web presence across University Advancement webpages. Web tasks include writing news stories and event recaps, update imagery, review and revise stock content, and maintain alumni benefits in coordination with the Office of Alumni Relations. Utilize analytics to assess overall effectiveness of the site and to direct changes.

    With the Advancement Writer, assist the American University Alumni Board President in writing a monthly message for inclusion in Alumni Update.

  • Project Management: Liaise with UCM and Advancement Communications creative team to develop reasonable production timelines to manage collateral needs that support Alumni Relations objectives.  Collateral support for alumni centric events includes the signature American University Alumni Awards, reunion weekends, American University Alumni Board meetings, regional and community-based events and American University Notable Alumni. Support also includes working with the Office of Alumni Relations in drafting communications and marketing plans for these programs.

  • Work with UCM and the Advancement Writer to generate alumni-related content for American magazine when necessary (class notes, alumni stories, and projects as needed); serve as liaison on print communication pieces.

  • Work with colleagues in Advancement Communications, University Communications and Marketing, Annual Giving, AU’s school and, colleges, Campus Life, and other units with alumni communication needs. Provide guidance, when necessary, to assist with communications received to the general alumni account.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time.

  • 35 hours per week.

  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends.

Salary Range:

  • $70,000- $77,800 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Travel Required:

  • Occasional travel may be required outside of the metropolitan Washington, D.C area.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field. 

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in communications and marketing, preferably in a nonprofit or higher education environment, showing progressive responsibilities and experience in marketing analysis, project management, and web content management. Four or more years of experience, preferred. 

  • Writing experience in the fields of development, public relations, journalism, customer service, investor relations, or similar fields will be considered. 

  • Keen attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. 

  • Knowledge of HTML, Adobe Creative Cloud, email marketing platforms (Engaging Networks), and content management systems (CommonSpot) preferred.  

  • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style is a plus.
