Job Title: Press Brake Operator
Location: Rhode Island
Hourly Rate: Based on Experience

Summary: The Press Brake Operator is responsible for setting up and operating press brake machines to bend, form, and shape metal components used in ship construction and repair. This role is critical in producing high-precision structural and outfitting parts that meet tight tolerances and specifications in a fast-paced shipyard environment.
The operator must be experienced in working with heavy-gauge materials (e.g., steel, aluminum) and able to interpret complex blueprints and fabrication drawings commonly used in the marine industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, adjust, and operate press brake machines to form metal components according to blueprints, work orders, and shipyard specifications.
- Select proper tooling, dies, and machine settings based on material type, thickness, and bend requirements.
- Inspect and verify finished parts for conformance using measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, protractors, and angle finders.
- Interpret technical drawings, bend allowances, and flat patterns to determine proper sequence of operations.
- Handle large and heavy sheet metal and plate material safely using overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts.
- Perform machine maintenance checks and notify supervisor of any mechanical or tooling issues.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and shipyard safety standards.
- Record production information, including quantities, materials used, and job completion status.
- Collaborate with welders, fitters, and other fabrication personnel to meet production goals and deadlines.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 2–4 years of experience operating press brakes in a heavy industrial or shipyard setting.
- Experience working with large-format press brakes (e.g., 400-ton+ capacity) and thick plate materials preferred.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting fabrication blueprints and shop drawings.
- Strong understanding of metal forming techniques, bend radius, bend allowances, and flat pattern layout.
- Familiarity with hydraulic press brakes (e.g., Amada, Cincinnati, Accurpress, or similar brands).
- Basic math skills and ability to calculate measurements and angles.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.
- OSHA 10 or 30 (Maritime) Certification
- Forklift and overhead crane operation certification
- Trade school or NCCER Fabrication certification (a plus)
Working Conditions:
- Work performed in a fabrication shop or shipyard environment with exposure to heavy machinery, noise, heat, and dust.
- Requires standing for long periods, frequent bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and operating heavy equipment.
- Must wear required PPE at all times (e.g., safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection).
- May involve overtime, weekend work, or shift work depending on production schedule and deadlines.
