Position Description

Contributes to the university’s mission through teaching and service, some variation by academic unit.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Serves as consultant to the West Texas Regional Poison Center, supervises pharmacists, nurses, and poison specialists; performs other duties as assigned. 
  • Provides patient care in the Emergency Department. 
  • Supervises medical toxicology fellows (once the program is established), residents, and medical students on-site and off-site. 
  • Provides performance evaluation, skill testing, and mentoring of residents, fellows, and medical students. 
  • Provides medical toxicology consultation services to inpatients and outpatients. 
  • Participates in resident and faculty recruitment. 
  • Serves as medical control physician for El Paso EMS while on duty in the Emergency Department. 
  • Assists Department Chair with implementation of departmental policies and monitoring staffing effectiveness. 
  • Participates in national societies such as ACEP, SAEM, AACT, ACMT. 
  • Engages in advancement of scientific knowledge through research and/or scholarship.
  • Serves the academic community through participation in institutional governance, such as committee work and other administrative duties.
  • Contributes to the community through academically-related public service complementary to the institutional mission. 
  • Assists with development and implementation of special departmental projects 
  • Delivers presentations in conferences for residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, and emergency medical technicians. 
  • Participates in chart audits and other clinical performance improvement efforts. 
  • Attends and participates in morbidity-mortality conferences and journal club conferences
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility. 
  • Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures, and processes. 
  • Upholds and promotes the values-based culture of TTUHSC El Paso. 
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations. 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Attends mandatory training provided and required by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine.
  • Board certification in Medical Toxicology by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine.
  • Knowledge and/or training in research, pediatric emergency medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, or preventative medicine.
  • Experience in teaching residents and medical students.
  • Evidence of growth in clinical, teaching, and research activities relating to the specialty
  • Knowledge of Medical Spanish.
  • ACLS/PALS/ ATLS certifications.
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation for the rank of Associate Professor or higher.

Pay Statement

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Successful completion of ACGME-accredited residency program in emergency medicine.
  • Successful completion of ACGME-accredited fellowship program in medical toxicology or equivalent experience.
  • Valid unrestricted Texas medical license, or eligibility for medical license in Texas.
