The Paramedic participates as a member of the nursing staff by performing various assessments, treatments and technical task as requested. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Paramedic assists with the delivery of non-critical and critical emergency care within the limits of his/her training, and documents that care in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Provides advanced emergency care in the hospital setting.
- Assesses emergency patients and assigns appropriate triage level.
- Assists with patient transport.
- Assists with room cleaning and turnover.
- Collects and documents data on Emergency Department records including but not limited to vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, oxygen saturations, height/weight and peak flows).
- May perform all procedures within the scope of the Paramedic license and as in accordance with hospital policies and at the direction of a provider, including:
- cardiac monitoring including cardio version and defibrillation
- moderate sedation
- assistance with Rapid Sequence Inductions (RSI)
- IV insertion and maintenance
- cast application and removal
- oxygen therapy
- setting up sterile procedures
- ear irrigations
- initial care and treatment of burns as well as follow-up care and debridement § cleans and dresses wounds
- blood draws (except legal samples)
- nasal and oral intubation at the direction of a provider
- intraosseous insertion and infusion
- patient teaching on the use of crutches, splints, dressings and wound care
- Documents all assessment and care given in accordance to hospital policy.
- Assists with emergency procedures including but not limited to a-line and chest tube insertion, lumbar punctures, thoracentesis and central lines.
- Administer all medications listed and approved by the state for Paramedics.
- Administer medications categories below that are not on the state list:
- Narcotic pain medications, oral, IV or IM.
- IV Piggy back antibiotics and antiemetics not currently on the approved state list.
- Immunizations
- IV thrombolytics with nurse/provider in attendance.
- High risk medications with a nurse serving as the second check
- Over the counter medications
- Initiate and complete Home Medication Lists and enter in EMR
- Witness narcotic waste and serve as the second check for high risk medications and blood products.
- Performs ACLS/PALS procedures per license.
- Provide care and assistance as needed for critical care transports.
- Attends and participates in hospital/departmental meetings as required.
- Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
- Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
- Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
- Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer services provided
