Texas Children’s is seeking a Senior Research Writer for our Neuro Research Institute to craft compelling stories that showcase our groundbreaking research and discoveries. This role will be key in advancing the visibility of Texas Children’s research across digital, print, and media platforms, while also supporting philanthropy and external engagement.
As a strategic communicator, you will work closely with research leaders, physicians, scientists, and external partners to identify and promote impactful research stories. Your writing will make complex science accessible to a broad audience, from donors and policymakers to media and the public.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Content Development
- Lead strategy, development, and implementation of research-related communications and fundraising efforts.
- Write, edit, and manage publication timelines for news releases, blogs, articles, and social media content.
- Develop creative ways to promote research to external audiences across multiple platforms.
- Manage research content on Texas Children’s websites and social media channels.
Relationship Building
- Serve as the primary point of contact for research communications across the organization.
- Build strong partnerships with internal leaders, physicians, scientists, and external collaborators.
- Coordinate with Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions to ensure cohesive coverage of research stories.
Communications Expertise
- Provide guidance to researchers and staff on effective science communications.
- Identify emerging channels and trends to promote biomedical research.
- Monitor peer institutions and apply best practices to strengthen Texas Children’s communications efforts.
Faculty Support & Metrics
- Support faculty advancement programs with editing, content development, and presentation materials.
- Develop and track performance metrics to measure communications impact.
- Maintain organized records, templates, and materials to streamline communications processes.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of biomedical and clinical research.
- Proven ability to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible, engaging communications.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and organizational skills with the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
- Experience with philanthropy communications and donor-focused messaging.
- Skilled in web content management systems, social media management, and tools such as Adobe Photoshop, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
- Collaborative and relationship-driven communication style with experience engaging senior leaders, scientists, and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
- (Required – one of the following):
- Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Biology, Chemistry, Law, or related field
- Ph.D. in Journalism, Communications, English, Biology, Chemistry, Law, or related field
- Juris Doctor (JD)
- Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in health care, technical, or biomedical research communications required
- Demonstrated body of work in science or research communications preferred.
