About the Department

Commissioner Kevin Anderson is looking for a Policy Aide who thrives on curiosity, initiative, and collaboration. In this role you’ll help shape solutions that make a real difference for the residents of Hennepin County’s District 7. Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Government Center in downtown Minneapolis at 300 6th St S, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. This candidate must be able to travel to various locations such as community sites and Hennepin County locations as well as travel out-of-state twice per year with the Commissioner. Work hours for this position are primarily Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional evenings and weekends as duties require. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.  


About the position type:
This is an unclassified, full-time, and benefit-earning position. Unclassified positions are non-permanent (at will) and are not subject to HR law/rules. 
 
This position is internally classified as a Senior Assistant to the County Commissioner (Unclassified). Click here to view the job classification specification. 


In this position, you will: 

  • Lead and support a wide range of initiatives including transportation to human services with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Build relationships with residents, community leaders, businesses, and partners in government to bring new and diverse perspectives into the office.
  • Research, evaluate, and translate complex issues into clear, actionable insights that inform decisions.
  • Provide thoughtful analysis and recommendations that help guide the Commissioner’s priorities.
  • Communicate effectively by drafting memos, talking points, correspondence, and board resolutions that cut through complexity.
  • Attend community meetings, events, and gatherings on behalf of the Commissioner, building trust and representing District 7 with professionalism.
  • Ensure follow-through on tasks, track progress, and support the Commissioner in staying connected to both big-picture strategy and day-to-day details.


Need to have:

  • One of the following:
    • Four or more years of related administrative experience. 
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in a field related to the position. 


Nice to have:

  • Experience in county government and related policy areas.
  • Ability to:
    • Think strategically by seeing the bigger picture while also managing the details to ensure work gets completed. 
    • Work independently, notice opportunities for continuous improvement, and work to find solutions.
    • Provide clear, accurate, compelling writing and confident speaking skills.
    • Listen, connect, and build trust with diverse groups.
