About the Department

The Equipment Operator, under direct supervision, performs routine manual labor and equipment operations for the Union County Solid Waste Department. Positions in this classification are entry level, requiring minimal experience. Proficiency is obtained through experience and/or training on the job until the employee acquires sufficient knowledge, ability and skills to be promoted to Equipment Operator II. Work involves operating various light and heavy equipment.

Position Duties

Assists with keeping solid waste facilities clean and clear of debris.
 
Operates various pieces of heavy equipment, including the grader, dozer, compactor, front-end loader, and other related equipment at the County Landfill.
 
Assists with maintenance and repairs of various pieces of equipment.
 
Assists in maintenance and repairs of storm water outfalls.
 
Loads trucks to the proper weight of 80,000 lbs. for transport to disposal facility.
 
Completes daily load inspection forms required per the operations plan.
 
Performs ground maintenance such as mowing and related activities.
 
Picks up windblown litter from around the scale and transfer station area, on a daily basis.
 
Washes down the transfer station and scale area twice a week per ops plan and documents cleaning for review by manager and NCDEQ.
 
Monitors the leachate tank and calls contractor when pump and haul is required.
 
Fills in for other operators in all areas of the facility as needed and works various shifts including weekends and holidays.
 
Performs other related duties as assigned.
 

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:  

High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED), and no required experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Licenses or Certifications:

Ability to obtain SWANA Transfer Station Operations Specialist certification within 18 months of hire date.

 

Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy. 

 

Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 18 months of hire date.

 

Special Requirements: 

Must be available to work various shifts including weekends and holidays.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:  

High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED), and two (2) years of experience in the solid waste industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Licenses or Certifications:   

SWANA Transfer Station Operations Specialist certification.

 

Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy. 

 

Special Requirements: 

Must be available to work various shifts including weekends and holidays.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including trucks, boring machines, tractor trailers, wheel loaders, tamps, computers, locators, air compressors, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs or other parts of body to grasp, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical requirements are for Heavy Work.                                  

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.
