About the Department
Under the direction of the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist assists in executing Ottawa County’s communications strategies. As part of a service center model, this position provides graphic design, brand management, and other communication to ensure consistent, high-quality messaging across platforms. The specialist collaborates with internal departments to produce engaging and informative materials that strengthen public trust and enhance awareness of County services, while also providing technical and administrative support for various communications initiatives.
Position Duties
- Collaborates with various County departments to develop concepts, design, and production of high-quality visual content for countywide campaigns, publications, and marketing materials, including print and digital collateral such as brochures, signage, business cards, social media graphics, presentations, infographics, newsletters, and promotional items.
- Collaborates with County departments, Communications Director, and Digital Communications Specialist to identify and execute department communication needs, with a focus on departments that have limited communications capacity.
- Contributes to the creative development of an editorial calendar and social media campaigns to guide efforts across social media platforms. Develops timely, helpful, and engaging written and visual content for social media posts.
- Manages the County’s brand and identity assets to ensure visual consistency and maintain public trust, including oversight of the template library and organized archiving of design elements and imagery.
- Develops, curates, and oversees a county-wide photo storage and organization system.
- Prepares electronic files according to commercial printers’ requirements, checks printer proofs, and ensures that layout and design are aligned with brand standards and best practices. Oversees production timelines and coordinates with vendors for print and promotional materials.
- Assists with maintaining and updating the Ottawa County website.
- Contributes to the development and execution of a County communications plan.
- Proofreads correspondence and other documents for inaccuracies in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and format.
- Mentors County staff, as needed, in design best practices and brand adherence.
- Stays up to date on emerging communications channels and technologies through conferences and other educational opportunities.
- All other duties assigned.
This is a full-time, benefited position working out of the Fillmore Complex in West Olive, MI. Typical working hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, media production, marketing, or a related field. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Other Qualifications
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent English language skills, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, construction, and usage.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills.
- Ability to interact positively and professionally with customers, community, business representatives, elected officials, coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and members of the general public.
- Introductory experience with audio/visual recording, production, and equipment operation.
- Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and general computer literacy.
- Working knowledge of social media channels, account management, advertising, policies, trends, and best practices.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro).
- Experience in graphic design. A design portfolio is strongly encouraged to be attached to the application.
- Licensed drone operator is a plus.
