The purpose of this position is to provide operations and maintenance support services to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Center for Animal Health’s (NCAH) in Ames, IA. The NCAH is specially designed and operated to research, perform tests and ultimately contain highly infectious diseases of livestock and wildlife species where they may be studied safely, posing no threat to the nation’s food industry or people. These positions support the central utility plant and biocontainment facilities at NCAH and may require entry into BSL-3 laboratories which require additional layers of personnel security requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the position will include but not limited to:
- Install, modify, repair, replace, and maintain electrical systems, distribution equipment, and controls in compliance with the National Electrical Code.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on electrical systems, identifying and correcting potential failures.
- Troubleshoot, test, and repair equipment such as generators, switchgear, UPS systems, transformers, motors, and HVAC control devices.
- Assist NCAH staff with scheduled testing and maintenance of emergency generators and controls.
- Maintain lighting and power systems, including replacement of fixtures, relays, wiring, and switches.
- Document all electrical work in the IBM Maximo CMMS system and provide updates to NCAH officials.
- Comply with OSHA, EPA, USDA, and facility biosafety and safety policies.
- Participate in quality control inspections and ensure all work meets established standards.
- Support facility emergency response, including snow/weather operations as directed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical maintenance, repair, and installation.
- Demonstrated ability to work with medium and low-voltage systems, generators, UPS, motors, lighting, and HVAC controls.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and electrical safety standards.
- Valid electrician’s license or documented training/certifications in electrical work.
- Must possess or be eligible to obtain a LincPass (federal ID credential).
- Ability to use CMMS software for tracking and reporting (IBM Maximo experience preferred).
- Must be able to work onsite full-time (40 hours/week, Monday–Friday) and support after-hours work with prior approval.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Compliance with OSHA, EPA, and USDA safety regulations.
Full-time Day Shift: Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
Pay Rate: $30.94/hr.
