About the Department

While in the Latent Examiner Trainee status, the employee participates and engages in a formal, full-time Latent Examiner training program and assigned work activities specifically designed and chosen to train the individual to conduct Latent Examinations. Work is performed under the immediate, daily supervision and guidance of a higher-level examiner or class/academy instructor. The position reports to the MCSO Forensic Laboratory Supervisor.

Position Duties

DUTIES:
A. Abide by the "Law Enforcement Code of Ethics". 
B. Thoroughly know, understand, and comply with Agency procedures, rules and operational directives. 
C. Participate in latent examiner training with an experienced MCSO Latent Print Examiner and and/outside training by recognized latent examiner training providers toward becoming an independent examiner capable of ten print and latent print comparisons, documenting case work and testifying in court. 
D. Be alert for conditions or situations, which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency, Forensic Unit or Latent Section and make recommendations for solutions. 
E. Perform any other duties that may be required by the Sheriff or through necessity of the situation by a supervisor

SUMMARY OF DUTIES (FOR DETAILS, SEE FORENSIC UNIT INTERNAL MANUAL): 
75% Print Analysis of Evidence: The primary duties and responsibilities of a Forensic Latent Print analyst will involve the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, preparation, and/or analysis of latent print and known fingerprint evidence. 
7% Technical Support: Provide technical and administrative support as needed for analysis of evidence involved in criminal investigations. 
5% Courtroom Testimony: Provide expert testimony in courts of law as to the results of the latent print examinations or verifications. 
5% Training: Provide information to law enforcement personnel on the capabilities of the Latent Print Section. 
3% Professional Development: Develop and maintain technical and professional proficiency as required. 
5% Administration: Maintain compliance of all appropriate administrative policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

JOB PREREQUISTES
(Non -Academy Trainee) 
A. High School Diploma or GED. 
B. Successfully complete the MCSO competitive selection process for the position including medical, drug screening, polygraph, and psychological assessments. 
C. May be required to pass a visual acuity examination. 
D. Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. 
E. Be able to effectively communicate information both orally and in writing in English.

 (Academy Trainee) 
A. High School Diploma or GED. 
B. Successfully complete the MCSO competitive selection process for the position including medical, drug screening, polygraph, and psychological assessments. 
C. May be required to pass a visual acuity examination. 
D. Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. 
E. Be able to effectively communicate information both orally and in writing in English. 
F. Successfully perform duties as a full-time student in a Latent Examiner Academy located in Meridian Mississippi for a period up to 6 months. (Lodging and per diem will be provided by the agency.) 
G. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with academy instructors, faculty, and fellow students. 
H. Maintain a business-like and professional demeanor at all times. 
I. Maintain satisfactory performance demonstrated by a passing grade and remaining in good standing in the academy. 
J. Required to make a 3-year employment commitment to Marion County Sheriff’s Office at the time of selection as a Latent Examiner Trainee. This commitment period will begin on the date the Latent Examiner Trainee completes the Latent Examiner Academy. 
K. After completion of the academy, the trainee will return to MCSO to complete on-site training.

Other Qualifications

WORKING CONDITIONS
(Non-Academy Trainee) 
Mainly indoor office environment but occasionally may be called to assist at crime scenes. Hours normally Monday through Friday, 0800 to 1700, but subject to being called out at other hours. May involve distasteful contacts when dealing with deaths or other unpleasant circumstances. May be exposed to various diseases or biological and chemical hazards.

(Academy Trainee) 
Attendance at the Academy in Meridian Mississippi for up to 6 months in primarily a classroom setting, on a Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm schedule. Upon returning to MCSO, the trainee will have the same working conditions as listed above for Non- Academy trainee. 


ADA: 
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: 
This position involves the processing of items to develop prints which could involve bending, kneeling, standing or sitting for long periods of time. Requires exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force on a recurring basis. Requires the ability to sit or stand at a desk, to use magnifying equipment to view fingerprint evidence for extended periods of time, and computer software with keyboarding operations. Requires good visual acuity for the analysis of small details in prints and the ability to communicate orally in the office and in courtroom testimony. 

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, odors, vibration, dust, and/or bodily fluids can occur. 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires good visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception and texture perception.
