What will I be doing in this role?

The Senior Cytotechnologist functions with minimal direction from supervisory personnel.  The Senior Cytotechnologist demonstrates expert understanding of and proficiency in screening and interpretation of both gynecology and non-gynecology cytology specimens.  Responsibilities include writing a concise description of microscopic finding for each case that is screened based upon established specific cytomorphologic criteria using accepted terminology and giving the final microscopic diagnosis for negative gynecology specimens.  Demonstrates an expert understanding of more complex cases. The Senior Cytotechnologist performs other related duties as requested, assists in image guided FNAs, and teaches interpretation utilizing cytologic diagnostic criteria to pathology residents. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the patient populations(s) being served.

  • Screens routine and complex gynecologic and non-gynecologic cases accurately while meeting established productivity standards; serves as a resource for more complex cases.
  • Provides for the appropriate educational experience to pathology residents assigned to the division.
  • Aids with image guided FNA collections and determines adequacy in the absence of a pathologist.
  • Verifies specimen identification, labeling and associated paperwork accurately and completely; resolves discrepancies.
  • Reviews new and existing policies and procedures and keeps abreast of changes. Supports implementation of new processes.
  • Recognizes basic and complex problems in sample processing, quality control and instrument function and serves as the technical resource, initiates problem-solving activities and corrective action procedures.
  • Performs routine quality control screening and completes documentation of negative gynecologic specimens.
  • Complies with documenting division-required processing/workload information in a timely manner.
  • Completes CAP required documentation assignments in the allotted time and accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Participates in special projects or assignments as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree in a biological science or a minimum of two (2) years of college if ASCP exam passed prior to August 1988.
  • Valid California Cytotechnologist license and ASCP Board of Registry certification as a Cytotechnologist.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in gynecologic interpretation.
