The Tooling Technician maintains, repairs, and calibrates tools, and equipment for manufacturing processes to ensure they operate efficiently and meet production specifications. Key responsibilities include inspecting tools, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting issues, ensuring tool accuracy through precise measurements, and collaborating with engineers on tool design. Essential skills for the role are a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and knowledge of machining and blueprint reading.
Essential Job Functions
- Retrieves cutting tools from various work cells
- Washes/cleans cutting tools
- Performs necessary cutting insert rotations or changes
- Performs heat shrink tool setting of solid carbide tools
- Sets length and diameter offsets for cutting tools using pre-setter
- Promptly enters tooling data into Tool Tracking System
- Assists in tooling trials performed by Engineering
- Assists in maintaining cutting tool RFID chips and evaluate further implementation of this technology
- Troubleshoots cutting tool issues in collaboration with operators, team leads, and shift leads
- Engraves cutting tools to ensure they are used on the correct machine
- Mechanical Aptitude: A strong understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to work with hand and power tools.
- Precision & Accuracy: The ability to perform precision measurements and ensure tools are functioning correctly.
- Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.
- Machining Skills: Knowledge of machining processes for repairing and fabricating tools.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous focus on tasks to ensure high-quality work and tool functionality.
Job Classification Requirements
- High School Diploma
- 3-5 years of combined experience in: machining, cutting tools, tool setting, high volume manufacturing environment
- Familiar with MS Office applications
- Demonstrates problem solving skills and analysis
- Proficient technical skills and exhibits technical capacity
- Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
- Ability to exert between 10 and 50 pounds on occasional basis
- Quality oriented & conscious
- Requires decision making skills
- Exhibits characteristics of good role-model
- Reliable with excellent attendance record
