About the Department
Under general supervision, supervises a crew of inmates assigned to inmate work programs from the Washoe County Regional Detention Center, or a crew of individuals sentenced and ordered to perform community services in lieu of serving jail time; and performs related work as required.
Intermittent Hourly positions are not Benefited positions.

Position Duties
One year of professional full-time experience in general groundskeeping, gardening, custodial maintenance, building maintenance, light construction or graffiti abatement; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License or Certificate
- A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
The Ideal Candidate Will
- Be willing to work shift work – weekends, holidays.
- Work with little to no supervision.
- Be able to multitask.
- Have the ability to prioritize daily schedules.
- Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with all different types of people from the Sheriff to the homeless and everything in between.
- Have prior lead or supervisor experience.
Minimum Qualifications
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
After the interview, top candidates must pass a background investigation which includes:
- Submit a set of fingerprints
- Complete and submit a personal history statement
- Pass a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination
This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.
“Intermittent hourly employee” means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an “on-call” basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year. Intermittent Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775-687-4200 to check for yearly updates.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
