About the Department

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.
The City of Norfolk, Maritime Center – Nauticus is seeking to hire a Deputy Director of Operations and Administration. This position plays a critical leadership role at Nauticus by directing the museum's operations with a focus on efficiency, coordinating interdepartmental collaboration, cultivating teamwork, and leading change management. Reporting directly to and working closely with the executive director, this individual is responsible for overseeing guest service functions, exhibits, facility/department operations, capital improvement projects, administrative functions, and internal processes. The position also supports strategic initiatives to improve efficiency, compliance, and performance, and serves as a primary liaison with the City of Norfolk.
Position Duties
- Serves as the leader of the organization’s day-to-day operations.
- Identifies best practices and improves internal systems throughout the organization with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
- Serves as primary liaison with all departments within the City of Norfolk.
- Oversee city budget, accounting, financial reporting and compliance
- Manages HR policies, staff onboarding, and payroll
- Provides guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to foster a high-performing and engaged team at all levels.
- Leads by mentoring, informal coaching, collegial leadership support; visible, approachable sounding board/resource for all staff
- Oversee administrative processes
- Builds strong internal service culture focused on teamwork and accountability
- Evaluates the effectiveness of specific programs to determine if objectives are being met.
- Manages and participates in the development and administration of the budget.
- Acts as Department Director when Director is absent.
- Perform specific tasks assigned by the Director, as needed.
Direct Reports
- Directs the guest services department, ensuring a superior guest experience onboard the battleship, inside the museum, and with Nauticus’ cruise ship operation while ensuring the safety of all stakeholders on site.
- Directs and delegates day-to-day tasks and projects of administrative team.
- Consults with and advises Exhibits Manager in day-to-day operations/maintenance and projects.
- Consults with and advises Facility Manager in day-to-day maintenance and repair of Nauticus, Battleship and Cruise terminal physical space, indoors and out.
- Advise on capital projects and new purchases.
- Provides excellent management for operational direct reports, encouraging innovation and excellence.
Strategic Plan
- Plays a leadership role in institutional strategy discussions and develops appropriate strategies to make progress on strategic plan, as well as developing and monitoring metrics for measuring success. Partners in and supports data collection and analysis of results.
- Leads institutional effort to create, implement, and advance facilities master plan, as indicated by the strategic plan.
Institution-wide Processes and Efficiency
- Develop policies and programs that foster good internal communications.
- Works closely with all departments to build efficiencies, promote coordination and collaboration.
- Monitor, evaluate, and improve staff efficiency by defining, measuring, analyzing, and improving processes within and across departments throughout the organization.
- Be a change agent and lead change where necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Five years' experience in a related field, preferably in a management capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher.
Five years' experience in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities such as museum operations, museum staff supervision, business/public administration; budgeting, financial oversight and planning; or management/program analysis.
