Associate Director of External Affairs

Primary Department:  External Affairs  

Direct Report To:  Chief Advocacy Officer 

Status: Full-time Exempt


Job Summary: 

As the Associate Director of External Affairs, you will assist with the development, planning, and execution of the Center’s public relations, institutional communications, government affairs, arts community relationship building and advocacy initiatives locally, statewide and nationally.  You must be a strategic, detail-oriented communicator – a self-starter with strong writing and presentation skills, experience in government relations, passionate about the arts, and flexible with work hours. Spanish fluency in writing and speaking is highly preferred.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Develop and execute institutional communications plans and for leadership community programs, and advocacy initiatives

· Lead initiatives telling the Center’s story - including our history, arts education programs, community outreach, supporting our arts community and more

· Pitch institutional stories to media outlets; write and archive press releases; prepare staff for interviews

· Collaborate with other arts organizations on joint advocacy initiatives and communications in Dallas and in Austin

· Maintain regular contact with key stakeholders including city officials, statewide arts advocates, arts commission, and tourism partners

· Manage production and content for Debut (online quarterly newsletter) and our Report to the Community

· Create and distribute institutional marketing materials such as brochures, rack cards, and education resources

· Manage photography and videography assets, including organizing databases and coordinating with external vendors

· Support Dallas Arts Month through planning, communications, and event coordination

· Represent the Center at advocacy meetings, monitor city/state politics, and build relationships with elected officials

· Assist with ticket and table requests for officials and special events

· Edit and proof internal and external communications; maintain and train staff on the Center’s Style Guide 

· Coordinate translation services to ensure accurate and culturally appropriate messaging

· Guide campus tours for press, dignitaries, and tourism groups

· Produce videos and presentations for internal and public use; manage video and photography requests

· Maintain and update Crisis Communications Plan; prepare for anticipated and unanticipated events

· Assist in developing and managing the department’s budget

Duties, tasks or projects may be assigned or modified as needed by the Chief Advocacy Officer. Extensive interdepartmental collaboration is expected, and the hired candidate will be required to maintain the confidentiality of certain proprietary information. This position is exempt and may require an excess of 40 hours a week. 



Requirements

  

  

Education

· Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or equivalent combination of training and experience.  

Experience & Skills

· At least four years of experience in journalism, public relations, or advocacy

· A strong, detail-oriented, and collaborative leader with a history of managing projects to completion

· Strong writing, editing, research, communication, organizational, and presentation skills (including grammar, style, etc.) 

· Knowledge of city/state politics and arts community is a plus

· Proficiency in Windows-based programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and CoPilot. Airtable or data automation, Canva is also a plus. 

· Must be available 24/7 to respond to crises and be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

· Spanish language writing and speaking fluency is highly valued

We also present the best of new and emerging Dallas arts groups through our Elevator Project and provide significant support services for the Dallas arts community. The Center also helps thousands of students and families explore the arts through a range of free arts education and community programs provided both at the Center and in the community.
