We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Safety Specialist working with the City of Yuma Human Resources Department. The ideal candidate will support and administer occupational safety programs, inspect City facilities to verify compliance, review accident and injury reports, investigate complaints and report findings, make recommendations, and conduct safety and awareness trainings.


Under basic supervision, administers City's occupational safety programs to inspect and verify compliance with Federal, State and City rules and regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supports the occupational safety programs for all City departments and programs; verifies compliance with state and Federal regulations and safety standards, and City policies and procedures.
  • Inspects City facilities and work sites for safety hazards and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines for workplace safety and employee injury investigations.
  • Investigates complaints related to safety in the City workplaces.
  • Reviews accident and injury reports for trends, causes and remedial actions needed.
  • Prepares responses to OSHA and State Workers Compensation injuries or complaints.
  • Researches, analyzes and interprets Federal and State safety regulations.
  • Reports findings of safety inspections and investigations and makes recommendations for corrective and remedial actions; provides technical assistance to City staff as needed.
  • Presents safety and awareness training and seminars.
  • Resolves routine technical problems encountered in performance of work assignments.
  • Updates and maintains records database; gathers, compiles, and evaluates data.
  • Performs general research, completes special projects, and prepares reports.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 
Associate's degree in Occupational and/or Environmental Health and Safety, or in a related science field; AND two years of experience in safety programs; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Knowledge of:

  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Federal and State rules and regulations governing occupational safety, including Occupational Health and Safety Association (OSHA), and Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH).
  • Techniques for investigating occupational safety hazards and injuries.
  • Record keeping and technical reporting principles and procedures.


Skill in:

  • Interpreting Federal and state safety rules and regulations, and City policies and procedures.
  • Using effective methods and techniques to deliver adult education and training programs.
  • Answering questions, advising staff, and assisting with safety issues.
  • Preparing and maintaining records, reports, and documentation.
  • Entering data into computer with skill and accuracy.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. Specific technical training and certifications may be required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment, and in City facilities.
