The Jacksonville Aviation Authority welcomes applications for the position of Airport Security Officer (ASO) through midnight on Friday, October 3, 2025.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for several law enforcement support duties that do not require the direct involvement of a sworn Police Officer. This position serves the public and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority by preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas, controlling traffic, enforcing parking regulations and enforcing all security regulations/policies.
Qualifications
- Responds to emergency calls along with medical personnel and provides needed support.
- Inspects and tests access control areas, alarms, fences, and signs in and around the SIDA area; documents any irregularities found
- Patrols premises and perimeter to establish and maintain visible security presence.
- Circulates among visitors and other patrons to ensure compliance with security regulations and policies.
- Inspects vehicles seeking access to the SIDA area.
- Verifies that all individuals and vehicles have current and correctly displayed SIDA clearance.
- Responds to unattended/unsecured property of the traveling public, the airport and/or its tenants, removing potential hazards through established department protocols.
- Respond to alarms and investigates regulatory violations.
- Issues warnings for rule infractions and security violations.
- Alert airport law enforcement when force is necessary.
- Provides escort services as directed.
- Writes daily reports of activities and irregularities observed, including but not limited to property damage, presence of unauthorized persons or other unusual occurrences.
- Creates general liability reports when accidents occur.
- Controls traffic during special events, holiday surges and dignitary transits.
- Assists the travelling public with finding lost property, destinations, family and friends etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles.
- Enforces parking laws by issuing parking citations as needed.
- Trains and documents training of contracted security officers at JIA
- Performs other related work as required.
- Performs screening of aviation workers and their property as they enter the SIDA area.

- Knowledge of security techniques, methods, and procedures.

- Ability to work a variety of shift assignments, some nights, and weekends.
- Ability to speak and hear clearly over police frequency/radio.
- Ability to effectively utilize telecommunications devices such as radios, cell phones etc.
- Ability to understand and apply policies, ordinances, and regulations.
- Ability to maintain accurate logs and prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
- Ability to firmly, courteously, and tactfully handle situations with respect for the rights of others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Ability to write legibly.
- Ability to apply personal defense techniques.
- Ability to learn and follow prescribed routines and procedures.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to administer basic first aid and CPR.
Required Education & Experience
- High School diploma or its equivalent and
- 1 year of experience working in a position that involves regular contact with the public
- Passing score on the Law Enforcement version of the Criminal Justice Basic Aptitude Test (CJBAT) taken within the past 4 years. (proof of the same required)
- CPR certification that is valid
Preferred Education & Experience
- Experience in security work in a corporate institution open to the public, the military or other highly regulated environment
- Experience in an airport environment
Licenses & Certifications
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E driver’s license.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Occasionally required to climb or balance.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to wear equipment belt weighing approximately 15-20 pounds for continuous duty periods of at least 8 to 12 hours.
