About the Department
Support and assist an assigned Minneapolis Health Department Staff member or Supervisor, performing work under supervision and observation in support of goals and improved public health services.
The Public Health Pathways Program (PHPP) provides opportunities to gain experience in public health, build a resume’, and provide opportunities to grow a professional and meaningful network. As a Public Health Associate, you will provide support to your assigned division within the Minneapolis Health Department.
Goals of the Public Health Pathways Program include:
- Diversifying the public health workforce within the Minneapolis Health Department and beyond
- Providing early exposure and direct experience to students interested in pursuing a career in public health
- Providing pathways to employment for those who wish to work in Public Health and serve the communities of Minneapolis

Position Duties
Act as assistant to a Minneapolis Health Department staff in a health division of the Health Department.
Under supervision, train in and learn the work of an identified classification.
Enter information into appropriate computer database systems in support of the assigned function.
Conduct research into assigned topics and prepare reports for supervisory review and approval.
Under supervision assist in, and support enforcement of City ordinances and Federal regulations.
Investigate and troubleshoot issues, reporting on findings.
Consult with appropriate agencies (both internal and external to the City) to ensure public health.
Respond to the residents and provide customer service in person and over the phone.
Perform general office duties such as copying, faxing, filing, etc.
Collaborate with supervisor to complete assigned projects and tasks, ensuring quality and timeliness.
Participate in regular check-ins with supervisor to discuss progress, challenges, and goals.
Attend scheduled division and department meetings to stay informed and contribute to team initiatives.
Engage in required training sessions and discussions on public health topics to enhance knowledge and awareness.
Develop and refine technical skills in tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams to improve efficiency and productivity.
Attend all in-person events, including site visits and other related activities, as needed for the role

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education
Completion of two years of College Course Work or Equivalent
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of 2 years of knowledge, skills, experience and interest to meet the minimum qualifications.

Commitment: Must be able to commit to a part-time schedule of approximately 10 to 25hours per week for a duration of about 34 weeks.Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Eligible List
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire one month after it has been established.
