What You'll Do

The Youth Career Navigator provides outreach and employment and training-focused case management to low-income and underserved youth residents in South King County. The Youth Career navigator will be responsible for recruiting youth from the surrounding community and from King County Housing Authority occupants, with a focus on BIPOC youth who face barriers to engagement, employment, and economic advancement. This position helps youth develop workplace readiness, job search skills and college success skills, and access training, internships, and employment opportunities. This position will also provide ongoing career and educational support and case management and will work one-on-one with each participant to designate career-focused goals and action steps, identify and develop strengths, remove barriers, apply for jobs, and prepare for employment. The Navigator also assists with youth development and employment workshops, supports recruitment of youth into employment and collaborates with community partners who serve youth. The Youth Career Navigator will also support the training needs and learning outcomes of young adults enrolled in the YWCA’s Food and Beverage Customer Service training program, a partnership with Starbucks.

This position has a social justice component that will require critical thinking around how external system impact the work that we are doing through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism and grounding those principles in everyday work, as well as working well in non-white environments and championing anti-racism policy, are required job skills and core values. Expectations of your role:
  • Recruits, interviews, and screens youth participants to determine eligibility and enrolls and orients program participants
  • Conducts assessments to determine planned services and customize an individual employment plan
  • Provides ongoing case management, coaching, and support
  • Works in tandem with other YWCA youth-serving staff including career navigators, instructors, life coaches, and youth development specialists
  • Networks and maintains contact with representatives of other social service providers and community colleges
  • Determines participant’s job readiness, training, placement and support services needs
  • Collaborates with participants to develop career and employment objectives and individual development action plans
  • Connects participants to appropriate occupational training programs, apprenticeship programs, internship opportunities, and youth employment and training programs
  • Supports youth enrolled in school or training to persist and successfully complete their program
  • Provides individual and group job search preparation and training to clarify and develop the habits and attitudes needed to be successful in the workplace
  • Coaches participants in developing resumes, cover letters, social media profiles and other job search materials and successful interviewing techniques
  • Provides clients with appropriate employer referrals and job search information
  • Facilitates successful job placements by matching participants with appropriate employers
  • Maintains complete and accurate client case files and makes necessary corrections and updates per program requirements and funder requests
  • Enters client information into the program database on a regular basis and completes program reports
  • Meets deadlines for case notes, monthly reports and quarterly full data and narrative reporting
  • Initiates and develops relationships with local employers for the purpose of developing job opportunities and placing clients
  • Implement all work by incorporating the YWCA’s Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism, sexism, classism and other oppressions intersect and are embedded in all institutions and systems. Recognize that solving racism is the root of how we understand and heal from these –isms.
  • Show demonstrated ability to interact with people of different cultures
  • Continue search for understanding of racial, gender and class equity
  • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring. Work alongside volunteers, where applicable. Understand where internalized oppressions (superiority and inferiority) play a role in volunteer and client interaction and know ways to address these oppressions from a solutions-based perspective
  • Assure that volunteers are treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, ethnic background, gender or socioeconomic background. Understand how racism has played a role in defining what respect and dignity is and use racial equity and multiracial perspectives when teaming with volunteers


  • Must have's to be successful:
  • One to two years of demonstrated experience required performing work related to client recruitment and enrollment, career assessment and planning, support services, occupational training, workplace readiness, job placement, records maintenance and outcomes reporting
  • Additional experience in job and Work-site development, internship placement, and retention services
  • Knowledge of the local labor market and target client population(s)
  • Knowledge of career assessment methods
  • Knowledge of local occupational training program and resources
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Experience working with communities of color
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty
  • Sensitivity to the needs of YWCA clients who are homeless, low income, limited English speaking, or impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse or other barriers to employment
  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work well with diverse family styles and multi-ethnic populations
  • Oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Creativity in problem-solving, decision making and negotiating solutions
  • Working independently and as a member of a team
  • Prioritizing, and organizing workload and managing time to meet deadlines
  • Computer familiarity with MS Word., Excel, and E-mail
  • Candidate must be able to travel independently between multiple work sites within a day

  • Hours, Rate, and Benefits
  • Hourly Range: $26.50 - 27.50
  • Hours: 40 Hours per week

  • At the time of hire, employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan
