About the Department

The Maintenance Technician – Greenbelt performs skilled mechanical and construction trades to maintain and preserve the City’s greenbelt pathways and amenities. The role oversees maintenance workers on repair projects, operates vehicles and specialized equipment, and supports the upkeep and restoration of public property under direct supervision.


Boise Parks and Recreation cares for 101 parks, 220 miles of Ridge to Rivers trails, 29 miles of Greenbelt pathway, and more than 5,000 acres of open space. We also manage facilities like Zoo Boise, golf courses, pools, and Idaho IceWorld while offering year-round classes, camps, and Adaptive Recreation programs. Position Duties

  • Ensures public safety by providing year-round maintenance and repair on greenbelt surfaces and amenities. Coordinates work schedules with the forestry department and contractors. Provides carpentry skills for various department projects. 
  • Monitors the water level of the Boise River and notifies the immediate supervisor and the superintendent of any flooding risk. Determines where to make greenbelt closures to ensure public safety and sets up detours for greenbelt users. Examines the riverbank for erosion and reports all deterioration issues for further observation and preservation planning.
  • Inspects the structural integrity of the pedestrian and vehicle bridges spanning the Boise River along the greenbelt route. Per state law, prepares a formal bridge inspection report for submission to the Idaho Transportation Department.
  • Prunes and trims trees to provide clear passageways on the greenbelt for pedestrians and cyclists. Controls grass, weeds and insects. Patrols the greenbelt for trash, litter and debris and oversees workers for cleanup and removal.
  • Inspects the greenbelt route and riverbanks for rodent tunnels that could cause washouts and takes appropriate action.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in performing skilled trades such as carpentry, welding, painting and the use of chemicals.
Knowledge of: 
  • Structural repair to buildings and hard surface areas
  • Materials and methods for facility maintenance 
  • Computer usage, including related software
  • Safety practices.
Ability to: 
  • Provide safety training to workers
  • Operate light, medium and heavy power equipment
  • Make decisions and delegate tasks, guide, train and oversee maintenance workers
  • Enforce compliance with all regulations, standards and guidelines
  • Make emergency repairs to equipment and facilities
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Four years of experience in a lead capacity for municipal maintenance and knowledge of city purchasing and bid requirements for working with vendors to repair or replace damaged property.
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Idaho Pesticide Operator License issued by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and Assembly Tester Certification issued by the Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licenses within three months of employment.

Physical Efforts

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
  • The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to chemicals.
