Danfoss Power Solutions in Plymouth, MN, is seeking a motivated Metallurgical Engineering Intern/Co-op to join our dynamic materials team for Summer 2026, with potential to continue during the academic year. This role is ideal for a rising junior, rising senior, or recent graduate in metallurgical engineering or materials science who is interested in building skills for a potential full-time role in Summer 2027.
The Metallurgical Engineering Intern/Co-op will work closely with experienced metallurgical staff, learning both the technical and business aspects of material selection and testing in a high-performing engineering environment. The position offers hands-on work in innovation and development projects, as well as production support activities. No relocation assistance or visa sponsorship is available for this position. Training and safety certification will be provided as part of onboarding. This role may be extended with reduced hours during the school year.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Perform mechanical and metallurgical testing, including Rockwell testing, Tensile testing, microstructure analysis, and nondestructive examination methods.
- Assist in innovation and development efforts for material selection, heat treatment processes, and product improvement.
- Document results in formal engineering reports, presentations, and internal communications.
- Communicates effectively, able to develop and deliver multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.
- Provide input into the disposition of nonconforming materials, temporary deviations (TDs), production part approvals (PPAP), and quality investigations related to metallurgy.
- Read and interpret test requests, coordinate with engineers, and maintain timely email communication.
- Read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Learn and use software tools including MS Office, Siemens Teamcenter, Planisware, and UKG.
- Participate in root cause and failure analysis investigations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, following all safety protocols.
- Build knowledge of Danfoss products, applications, and use cases to inform material and testing decisions.
What We're Looking For
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science; rising junior, rising senior, or recent graduate status required
- Safety-first mindset with willingness to learn required lab protocols
- Strong theoretical knowledge of material science principles; ability to apply concepts in practical lab settings
- Excellent interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with and learn from experienced team members
- Basic proficiency with MS Office; ability to learn new tools and systems quickly
- Strong written communication skills for technical documentation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microscopy techniques and metallographic analysis
- Familiarity with CAD software for sample preparation or fixture design
- Prior exposure to metallurgical or materials testing methods
- Interest in continuous improvement, innovation, and business-oriented problem solving
