JOB SUMMARY

Baker University, School of Nursing seeks an innovative and passionate leader who is committed to the liberal arts and sciences education. Founded in 1858, Baker University is the first private institution in Kansas. The institution maintains its United Methodist heritage through its values: student learning and academic excellence; critical thinking; inquiry, and freedom of expression; integrating learning with faith and values; connections; inclusiveness and service to the community. The School of Nursing includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, a new online accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, and pathways for Associate Degree in Nursing to Bachelor and Master degrees (ADN to BSN & ADN to MSN). Comprised of ~20 full-time faculty and staff, the School of Nursing serves up to 230 students and 40-50 post licensure students.

The Dean provides leadership in the delivery of the Baker University School of Nursing’s academic mission as it interfaces with the mission of Stormont Vail Heath (SVH) and Baker University (BU). The Dean has authority and responsibility for the total operation of the School of Nursing (SON), including faculty, student, and fiscal functions. The Dean of SON facilitates internal and external facing partnerships between nursing and other healthcare professionals.

JOB DUTIES

Essential Duties

Administrative Responsibilities:

Academic Officer

  • Provide leadership that is consistent with the mission, goals and values of BU and SVH.
  • Serve as the Nursing Chief Academic Officer with a dual reporting role to both SVH and BU University Chief Academic Officer.
  • Collaborate with the other BU academic Deans across campus, Vice President of Enrollment anagement, Student Affairs, and Alumni and Advancement.
  • Collaborates with SVH leadership across departments and facilities.
  • Develop, present, implement, monitor, and evaluate SON budgets.
  • Facilitate communication regarding the SON with BU, SVH, and all communities of interest.
  • Coordinate recruitment and marketing services with BU and SVH.

Academic Leadership & Strategic Planning:

  • Lead faculty and students by building an inclusive and transparent environment for students and faculty to explore and nurture growth through academic program/curriculum assessments, reviews, and updates.
  • Collaborates with faculty to ensure academic programs are led through strategic academic planning and staffed with discipline-specific experts.
  • Communicate progress and key performance indicators to the BU Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and the SVH SVP & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Oversee design, development, maintenance, evaluation and revision of curriculum and academic resources.
  • Collaborates with BU and SVH to ensure that student services (admission, financial aid, registrar, business office, IT) and academic resources are made available to support continued excellence in the nursing program.

Academic Success:

  • Establish and implement retention efforts that are unique to the students in the SON to ensure students have the appropriate academic resources to be successful and maintain desired retention rates.

Accreditation:

  • Work with Baker University leaders to maintain university programmatic accreditation by ensuring appropriate processes are in place for data collection and assessment.
  • Complete annual KSBN and CCNE reports and tracks/trends student/program statistics.

Faculty Support:

  • Be an active voice for faculty for their needs including teaching, research, and service opportunities that empower and engage faculty across the campus and community.
  • Mentor, retain, and motivate faculty/departments to fully serve students.
  • Continuously evaluate the need for academic/technology resources to support both on-ground and online teaching.
  • Serve as resource person to the BU CAO and SVH SVP & CNO.

Governance:

  • In partnership with the academic leaders, faculty, administrators, and board members, the Dean transparently participates in shared governance to improve student success, retention, graduate rates and leads by following the university governance policies.

Faculty Responsibilities:

  • Serve as expert resource to faculty for development and for scholarly activities.
  • Participates in scholarship, service, and professional development activities that promote the school, personal and professional interests.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise and evaluate the Associate and Assistant Deans, Program Manager, Student Admissions Coordinator and Administrative Assistant/Office Coordinator. Indirectly supervise the teaching faculty. Determine merit raises for all faculty and staff within guidelines developed by SVH. Assure all assigned staff meet competency requirements of SVH.

Marginal Job Duties

• Facilitate student and alumni relationships.

• Represent Baker SON in state, regional, and national nursing initiatives.

• Coordinate development opportunities with BU and the Stormont-Vail Foundation.

• Appreciates Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring in every aspect of care delivery at SVH.

• The employee works indoors in a well-lighted, air conditioned/heated environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• Doctorate in nursing (PhD, DNSc, DNP) or related discipline Required

• Master’s degree in Nursing Required

Work Experience

5  years Experience as a nursing faculty member in a college or university. Required

Clinical practice and administrative experience. Required

A broad range of preparation and experience in administration, scholarship, faculty development, teaching, curriculum, and coordination of undergraduate and graduate programs. Preferred

Documented success in obtaining funding for learning resources and other program needs. Preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
 

•Ability to work collaboratively with university, hospital, school of nursing personnel and other external constituencies.

•Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities and leadership skills.

•Active participant in professional and community activities.

 

Licenses and Certifications

•Registered Nurse – KSBN

Current Kansas nursing License or eligibility for Kansas Licensure
