About the Department

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill two (2) full-time positions in the class of Deputy Probation Officer I/II at the Probation department. 

The eligible list that is established from this recruitment will also be used to fill future vacancies in this class. The Deputy Probation Officer I/II position is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to make positive change in client’s lives while ensuring the public safety of the community. 
The level at which a candidate is placed will depend on their background and experience, and at the discretion of the appointing authority. The salary range for each classification level is as follows:

Deputy Probation Officer I:  $75,088.00 - $91,270.40 Annually
Deputy Probation Officer II: $83,761.60 - $101,816.00 Annually

THE POSITION
Deputy Probation Officer I
This is a peace officer classification under the California Penal Code Section 830.5 with powers of arrest relative to probationers defined by California Penal Code Section 835.   Working under close supervision, the Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry- level classification into the Deputy Probation Officer class series. The incumbent functions as an officer of the court, investigates cases of adult felony criminality and application for probation, investigates cases of juvenile delinquency, has the power of arrest for juveniles and adults on probation; performs other related duties as required. Deputy Probation Officers are issued and required to carry chemical agents. Some departmental assignments require that incumbents carry firearms at the direction of the County Probation Officer.
 
Deputy Probation Officer II
This is a peace officer classification under Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code with powers of arrest relative to probationers defined by Section 835 of the California Penal Code. The Deputy Probation Officer II is the journey level classification of the Deputy Probation Officer class series. Under minimal supervision and with a substantial degree of independence, an incumbent in this classification functions as an officer of the court, investigates cases of adult felony criminality and application for probation, investigates cases of juvenile delinquency, and has the power of arrest for juveniles and adults on probation; performs other related duties as required.  Deputy Probation Officers are issued and required to carry chemical agents, including Mace. Some departmental assignments require that incumbents carry firearms. Probation Officers may be carrying firearms at the direction of the County Probation Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Deputy Probation Officer:
Education: Graduation from a four year college or university or completion of its equivalent unit course-work, with a major in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, Sociology, Social Welfare, Human Development, Psychology, Political Science, or other related field.

Experience: Experience in public safety, probation, parole, social welfare, detention, or other related fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years.

Typing Proficiency:  Within six months of initial hire, the employee must display a typing proficiency of at least 45 words per minute.  Applicants are encouraged to provide a typing certificate.

Deputy Probation Officer II:
Education: Graduation from a four year college or university or completion of its equivalent unit course-work, with a major in Correction, Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, Sociology, Social Welfare, Human Development, Psychology, Political Science, or any of the other related social or behavioral sciences. (Experience in probation, parole, social welfare, or in a juvenile or adult detention facility may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years).

Experience: One year of paid professional probation or parole experience comparable to that of a Deputy Probation Officer in Yolo County.

Typing Proficiency:  Within six months of initial hire, the employee must display a typing proficiency of at least 45 words per minute.  Applicants are encouraged to provide a typing certificate.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this classification are designated as peace officers in accordance with Penal Code Section 830.5.   As such, the applicant must meet the standards stipulated in Government Code Sections 1029-1031.5 which include the following:  

  • Except under special circumstances, shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any state or federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state. (California Government Code Section 1029).
  • Shall have good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation (Section 1029 California Government Code).
  • Through examination by medical and psychiatric professionals found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer (California Government Code Section 1031).
  • Be a citizen of the United States (California Government Code Section 1031.5).

LICENSE
Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.  

SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Must successfully complete the Arrest, Search, and Seizure training required by Penal Code Sections 832; and successfully complete 200 hours of instruction in the Basic Probation Officer Course as certified by the California State Board of Corrections. The officer must also take and pass specified training to include CPR, first aid, and management of assaultive behavior and use of chemical agents with annual re-qualification. Probation Officers required to carry firearms will be required to qualify in firearms proficiency pursuant to Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and pass quarterly firearms qualification.

DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICERS ANNUAL TRAINING
Deputy Probation Officers must successfully complete 40 hours of annual training as certified by the California State Board of Corrections designed as continuing education to update and improve knowledge and skills in any year in which the incumbent is not enrolled in a basic course. This special requirement shall continue for as long as the Probation Department participates in the State Standards and Training Program.

Written Examination: All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written examination. This examination may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in this job announcement. Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of the examination to the email address included in the application. All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Applicants achieving a passing score will move to the next phase in the selection process: screening for best qualified.  

Verification of Education
Acceptable forms of educational documentation are official or unofficial transcripts that list the student's name, institution name, field of study and date the degree was awarded. 
For recent graduates who have not received proof of their degree yet, a letter from the registrar's office stating that all requirements for graduation have been met and listing the field of study will be sufficient proof of graduation.

All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English, the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from Institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities. Applicants who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university, must submit one of the following:
 
1. A written statement from a U.S accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required.
2. An evaluation of the applicant's degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content, credit and grade.
Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination.
