The Commercial Underwriter ll underwrites commercial business, real estate, and SBA 504 loan requests. The underwriter will analyze financial information including business and personal tax returns, complete a credit presentation clearly outlining the loan request, provides information regarding the Borrower, collateral pledged and financial health of the business, it’s related entities and owners, and may recommend alternative loan structures. Analyzes commercial loan applications and renewals and determines credit worthiness and appropriate grading for consideration of the loan request. The Commercial Underwriter works closely with the Business Banker and Business Loan Administrator through the loan process to ensure a timely and favorable Member experience
Essential Duties
Analyzes commercial loan applications received by Business Bankers to determine eligibility of request. Provides prompt turnaround time upon request. Confers with Business Banker and Director of Business Lending, if applicable, to determine Member needs and discuss options for borrowers. Requests any additional information needed to complete processing and periodically attends client meetings to provide credit expertise. Recommends credit approval requirements including the establishment of financial performance covenants, monitoring requirements, and other loan provisions and ensures accurate grading of new and existing credits based on analysis.
Coordinates the credit approval process, evaluates repayment, and mitigates risk.
Analyzes key factors such as industry, management, and economic trends.
Assures the Member’s loan request is processed accurately and timely. Coordinates with the Business Loan Administrator during the underwriting process
Orders business credit reports and personal credit reports on business principals.
Assists Business Bankers as needed in the preparation of Interim Credit Reports and Real Estate Update Memos.
Maintains a current understanding of Credit Union’s underwriting guidelines, procedures, policies and compliance issues. Maintains a working knowledge of regulatory requirements for documentation and regulations relating to commercial lending.
Maintains a current understanding of Credit Union’s policies and procedures in compliance with all federal and state laws, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act (SARs, CIP, OFAC), Information Security (GLBA), Identity Theft Red Flags, Financial Elder Abuse Reporting, and any other applicable regulations that may be specific to your job duties.

Assists Director of Business Lending in the development and completion of special projects, spreadsheets, graphs, and reports as assigned

Must have experience in small business/commercial lending and credit analysis. Have a thorough understanding of commercial financial statements and ability to communicate with commercial business owners. Must be able to analyze financial information, prepare cash flow and ratio analysis. Have experience in loan recommendations and provide a concise credit presentation. Experience in statistical portfolio management. Possess leadership abilities in a team environment and provide project leadership. Provides guidance to the Commercial Underwriter I when appropriate and recommend appropriate loan structure.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to Members and other Team Members at the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute dividends and interest.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
