Job Summary

**THIS POSITION IS GRANT FUNDED AND CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING** BASIC FUNCTION: Under general supervision to assist with the articulation between school, home, social service and legal agencies for at-risk students, to support the efforts to improve poor school attendance and tardiness to have personal contact with students, parents and community agencies regarding student problems, to attend Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearings, and to perform related duties as required. Please see job description for more information REQUIREMENTS: Equivalent to completion of high school with the addition of several related post-secondary courses. Two years of related experience Possession of a valid California driver’s license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: Bilingual Spanish

ALUM ROCK UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT Position Title: CHILD WELFARE AND ATTENDANCE LIAISON Reports to: Director of Student Services Functions: Under general supervision to assist with the articulation between school, home, social service and legal agencies for at-risk students, to support the efforts to improve poor school attendance and tardiness to have personal contact with students, parents and community agencies regarding student problems, to attend Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearings, and to perform related duties as required. Areas of Responsibility: •Serves as Hearing Officer for Expulsion Proceedings •Monitors student attendance at assigned school •Works with families who have special needs •Consults with site administrators and other personnel regarding student attendance and punctuality •Conducts hearings, reviews cases, attends and participates at SARB hearings •Meets with students and parents, both at the school site and home visits •Contacts appropriate community or legal agencies regarding student problems •Collects information and documentation regarding students from a variety of sources including parents, school and community agencies •Assists with writing of reports following hearings •Communicates results of hearings to students, parents, school administrators and appropriate community agencies •Makes referrals to such agencies as necessary •Assists in the transfer of students to alternative educational programs when appropriate •Participates in special programs designed to curb unauthorized student absences in conjunction with the schools and police department •Prepares a variety of correspondence and reports •Assists in collecting and preparing crime reports •Other related duties as assigned Qualifications: Knowledge of: •Development, needs and characteristics of school age youth •Basic rules of attendance for school age students •Basic principals and techniques in communicating and providing advice to students and families •Appropriate local community agencies to which referrals may be made Ability to: •Understand and interpret rules, regulations and laws governing student attendance •Provide information, advice and referral to students and their families •Analyze situations and take appropriate action in a variety of situations Child Welfare and Attendance Liaison – Continued •Establish and maintain confidential records regarding students and their families •Create and maintain schedules and coordinate activities with various groups •Provide services in crisis situations remaining calm and using good judgment •Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work •Understand and follow oral and written directions •Compile and prepare a variety of reports Other Requirements: Possession of a valid California drivers license Working Conditions: Environment Office environment Driving a vehicle to make home visits Physical Demands: Sitting for an extended period of time Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
