Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington, DC (Rochambeau), has an immediate opening for a LEAD BUS DRIVER (CDL Required)

Location: Bethesda, MD 20814
Reports to: Director of Transportation

Job Type: Non-Exempt, Hourly, Split Shift, Seasonal, 7.5 hours a day / 37.5 hours a week (August through June) 6:00-9:30AM & 3:00-7:00PM

Salary Information: The starting salary is $28.50 per hour, per hour worked. Negotiable based on skills and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead School Bus Driver's main responsibilities are to safely transport students and staff, and to manage daily bus operations. This includes knowing all routes, conducting bus inspections, and preparing necessary reports. The role also requires basic mechanical skills for minor repairs. The position reports to the Director of Transportation. 


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • transport students and authorized personnel to and from school, field trips, and other approved activities.

  • Ensuring the safety and welfare of all transported passengers. 

  • Obey traffic laws and submit required reports.   

  • Follow school transportation policies and procedures.  

  • Manage passenger behavior effectively and communicate discipline issues to the supervisor. 

  • Perform daily vehicle inspections and minor maintenance repairs.  

  • Be familiar with all bus routes and collaborate with the Transportation Department and school management regarding route hazards to suggest route changes, as needed.

  • ensure bus lot operations are maintained.

  • perform regular safety inspections of all buses, as required.

  • prepare a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities, as designated by the Transportation Office.

  • Assist bus driver colleagues as requested by management.  

  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, tightening screws, topping off fluids, checking oil, etc.

  • Attend assigned workshops and training programs.  

  • Drive buses to the repair facility and back as required and communicate with the repair facility to complete maintenance and repairs on assigned vehicle(s). 

  • Positively support the school’s mission, policies, and practices, and work collaboratively in a professional organization.

  • Undertake any other reasonable task as required.

  • Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance.

  • Performs additional related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education Required: 

  • High school graduate or equivalent.  

  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English is desired.

Experience Required: 

  • 2-3 years experience as a driver of a truck or commercial passenger vehicle; and/or 

  • 2-3 years experience as a driver of a passenger vehicle with a verifiable good driving record; and/or

  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

  • Air brake trained and experienced

Certifications/Licenses required: 

  • Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with Passenger Transport (P) and School Bus Authorized (S) endorsement; and 

  • Certification in CPR/First Aid procedures; or the willingness to obtain certification within the first six months of employment.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a pleasant demeanor with co-workers, supervisors, and others.

  • Basic computer and writing skills with attention to detail.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Subject to pre-employment drug testing for use of certain controlled substances and alcohol, as well as random testing thereafter.  Ability to work overtime to complete required bus routes/trips. No more than 3 current points on a verifiable driving record and a satisfactory past driving record. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position primarily operates in school, outdoor, and in-transit environments. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, cold, etc., and maintain physical mobility, including extended sitting, walking, standing, twisting, and stair climbing. Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination and testing requirements.
