About the Department

The Animal Services Department is seeking a compassionate and innovated Animal Care Supervisor to join our team! Our mission is to create a PAWsitive impact by enriching the lives of animals and people. We accomplish this by caring for thousands of animals (domestic and wildlife) annually and working to reunite them with their owners, re-home them, or transfer them to rescue and rehabilitation organizations. We also play an important role in assisting our residents with various animal related concerns. Position Duties

Must have the ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays, special events and on-call basis. 

You'll be responsible for:
  • Leading the behavior team in performing behavior evaluations on animals in our care.
  • Developing enrichment programs, monitoring animals for kennel stress, and developing strategies for managing
    and alleviating kennel stress.
  • Making recommendations to Leadership for animal placement or euthanasia.
  • Managing the Safety Equipment inventory and providing training on use of the equipment to staff & volunteers.
  • Training staff and volunteers on safe and humane animal handling techniques. 
  • Overseeing the Animal Rescue Program and performing a variety of rescue networking responsibilities.
  • Planning, organizing, and managing the day-to-day operations. Scheduling and monitoring the work of the Animal
    Care/Behavior Team personnel and volunteers.
  • Ensuring the animals are being cleaned, and their cages are sanitized and disinfected daily.
  • Overseeing general housekeeping; washing dishes and laundry; keeping the facilities and equipment in good
    working order; ensuring the Animal Center is organized and clutter free.
  • Identifying and reporting to Veterinary Services animals who are not thriving, become ill, and/or have a change in
    condition; collaborate with Veterinary Services to ensure medical treatments are being administered as prescribed.
  • Ordering supplies, maintaining detailed records related to animal care, volunteer support, and incidents. 
  • Planning and participating in community education events, outreach programs, adoption events, and fundraisers. 
  • Interacting with rescue groups, community groups, elected and appointed officials, other government agencies,
    staff and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Working collaboratively with the Leadership Team on projects and shelter operations. 
  • Other duties as assigned by Animal Center Director and/or Deputy Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school plus two or more years of work involving animal care, evaluation and placement; and supervisory experience.


Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C or Class 3 California Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driving record. CPDT, IACP, or Master Dog Trainer certificate is desirable or ability to obtain such training certificate within 1 year of appointment is highly recommended.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Operational characteristics, services and activities of an Animal Services program including animal care, placement and euthanasia; veterinary services; principles of animal behavior and training; customer service; identification of a variety of breeds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals; animal registration, adoption, and medical services; principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; pertinent State and local laws, codes and regulations; occupational hazards and safety practices necessary in the area of animal services. Interpret, explain, and enforce policies, procedures and regulations. Operate modern office equipment including personal computer and applicable word processing, spreadsheet programs; plan, coordinate, supervise, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including management, staff, health care representatives, community groups, and the public. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Procedures related to kennel cleaning and maintenance of facilities; operate cleaning equipment and other tools used in the maintenance of kennels; administer injections and medications to all types of animals; handle animals in a safe and efficient manner; meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public; respond to requests and inquiries for information regarding animal services; work independently in the absence of supervision; understand and carry out oral and written instructions.


Special Requirements:

Work weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events, as needed.
