About the Department
This position is responsible for maintaining the signs and markings in unincorporated Douglas County.
This is work that involves a combination of skills for preparing, fabricating, installing and maintaining all county road traffic control devices, including traffic signs and roadway markings.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Operates equipment including forklifts, pickups, and single axle trucks.
- Assists in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of traffic control signs throughout unincorporated Douglas County in accordance with the latest version of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
- Assists with the installation of pavement markings throughout unincorporated Douglas County in accordance with the latest version of the MUTCD.
- Performs routine maintenance and operation of equipment.
- Performs snow removal and sand/de-icing material applications.
- Other Duties: Will perform other duties as assigned.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Signing – Learns and applies the fabrication methods, equipment, and materials to be used, the colors and shapes of the signs, i.e. regulatory, warning and guide signs, and the equipment for installation.
- Striping / Markings – Learns and applies the types of materials (paint, epoxy, thermoplastic, methyl-methacrylate) and specifications for application; the road conditions and temperatures to apply materials; the ability to read blueprints/plans. Requires gaining basic knowledge of striping equipment (trucks, hand machines, and striping removal machines) and how to operate and maintain them; how to set up traffic control for work zones for spot work or safely run a striping train of vehicles per federal/state/local standards; and knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Work Zone Traffic Control – Learns and applies barricade classifications and when to use each type. Be able to read and set up work zones per Part VI of the MUTCD.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
- Must possess a State of Colorado Class (B) Commercial Driver License with complying insurance within 6 months after hire. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. Upon possession of a Commercial Driver License, incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Ability to obtain a Colorado Department of Transportation Flaggers Certification Card within six months of employment.
- Within 1 ½ years, employee must become familiar with the MUTCD, obtain certification as an ATTSA or IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician and obtain an IMSA Level I Sign & Markings certification.
