About the Department

The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 56,000) is a vibrant, progressive community located in the fast-growing Interstate 80 corridor in southwest suburban Chicago.  The Public Works Department consists of the Streets, Water, and Facilities & Fleet divisions that provide quality public services to residents with a very motivated and professional workforce. The Village’s Fleet Division consists of three mechanics working in a dedicated service garage and is responsible for the maintenance of over 325 automotive and other mechanical equipment including Village sedans, police squad cars, pick-up trucks, 1-ton diesel trucks, heavy equipment (Plow trucks, Sweepers, Backhoes), and Wheel Loaders. Mechanics regularly repair, service and maintain all automotive and other mechanical equipment.  Employees perform preventive maintenance on various vehicles/equipment and exercise considerable independence in the details of technical work and the work is reviewed for results. Our dedicated and talented fleet maintenance crew takes great pride in maintaining vehicles and equipment in-house.

We have an immediate opening for a Diesel Mechanic to join the maintenance crew and support the fleet operations of the Public Works Department.

Position Duties

Under the direction of the Head Mechanic this position repairs, services and maintains automotive and other mechanical equipment including trucks, cars, sweepers, tractors, loaders and other mechanical equipment.  Regularly repairs or replaces brakes, tires and other equipment; services, repairs and welds a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; repairs and services heating and air conditioning systems; diagnosis and troubleshoots electrical issues;  repairs and services gas and diesel engines, light and heavy-duty trucks/vehicles, construction equipment, hydraulic powered systems/equipment, pumps, and generators.   Additionally, this position supports snow operations with snow plowing, when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma, trade school certificate or GED supplemented by successful completion of various specialized diagnostic and repair courses or equivalent combination of training and/or experience is required.  Must have 3 to 5 years of experience in servicing and maintaining automotive vehicles and equipment with progressive levels of duties and responsibilities.  Proficiency with current automobile computer software systems, including email, job specific automotive and truck repair service manual software and customer service systems preferred.

Possession of a valid CDL class “B” driver’s license with “N” endorsement within six (6) months of date of hire and CDL class “A” driver’s license within twelve (12) months of date of hire is required.

Must be ASE certified and/or manufacturer certified in diesel and hydraulic equipment repairs in 4 repair fields: T1 – Gasoline Engines, T2 – Diesel Engines, T4 - Brakes, and T7 – Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC).

These additional ASE Certification must be acquired within twelve (12) months of hire and includes certification in the following 4 repair fields:  T3 – Drive Train, T5 – Suspension & Steering, T6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems, T8 – Preventative Maintenance Inspection.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work independently with minimum supervision, is skilled in diesel automotive repairs and maintenance, has knowledge of diagnostic equipment and computerized records keeping, and is able to follow written/oral instruction and perform all duties in conformance with all necessary safety precautions. They will be a team player with the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and willingness to respond to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week and carry a wireless communication device.

Other Qualifications

This is a collectively bargained position under IUOE Local 150, IUOE CBA 5/1/2022 - 4/30/2025.  Hiring Range is $31.42-$37.68 depending on qualifications.
