The Maintenance HVAC Engineer provides professional expertise in servicing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC systems across K-12 educational facilities. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, installing, adjusting, and replacing a wide range of equipment such as boilers, chillers, air handlers, exhaust fans, rooftop units, heat recovery units, refrigeration systems (including refrigerators, walk-in freezers, and ice machines), and related control devices (relays, contactors, transformers, timers, and thermostats). The role requires proficiency in web-based building management systems to ensure efficient air distribution and occupant comfort.
Working under the direction of the HVAC Department Head, the Maintenance HVAC Engineer may assist with installations, maintenance, and repairs while occasionally performing non-HVAC assignments as essential personnel. This position plays a critical role in the safety, security, and daily operations of the school division.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs advanced general maintenance on/within school division buildings under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor:
- HVAC: Installs, repairs, and maintains the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and refrigeration equipment of the school division buildings; Maintain, operate, and care for the physical appearance of the assigned school division's vehicles.
- Provide solutions for faulty HVAC mechanical equipment or to correct poor indoor air quality conditions.
- Make use of new ideas for improving the workplace experience, equipment performance and worker motivation.
- Interpret school division and maintenance department policies to assigned personnel, and enforces safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards.
- Communicate proper stock levels of repair or replacement parts to parts manager.
- Insures all work orders are performed in a timely manner to acceptable quality standards.

Examines buildings on a regular basis to ensure equipment is operating efficiently

Establishes and recommends priorities on repair projects

Makes minor and major building repairs as directed

Runs and maintains all mechanical, emergency and building equipment

Keeps inventory of all resources and supplies on hand, and requisition replacements on
appropriate forms far enough in advance to ensure timely delivery that will not hinder the
maintenance of the building - Complies with the local codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction
- Works cooperatively with others, including other maintenance staff, to effectively carry out the goals of the department
- Assists with removing snow, during inclement weather, from parking, including unloading sand and rock salt

Education and Experience:
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Journeyman Certification in a specific area of trade
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License in Virginia
- Continued education, certification or additional licensure -OR- three (3) years of HVAC technical experience
Preferred
- Current (valid, non-expired) Driver’s License
- Seven (7) years of experience working as an HVAC maintenance technician, ideally within a public school system or other public institution or setting
Special Requirements:
- The Maintenance HVAC Engineer is required to attend safety training seminars.
- The employee must pass a yearly physical and participate fully in the drug/alchol screening program.
- This position is designated as essential personnel and requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be placed on call for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day), full-time position. The work schedule for this position is 7.5 hours worked per day, excluding lunch. This position is evaluated annually.
