Summary:

The AU Career Center supports the career development of nearly 8,000 students from five schools: the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), School of International Service (SIS), School of Communication (SOC), School of Education (SOE), and School of Public Affairs (SPA). Each year, our Office of Merit Awards prepares students from across the University for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. An American University Part-Time Career Advisor has a broad understanding of career advising techniques and experiential learning and effectively advises students from varied backgrounds and perspectives. This includes undergraduate and graduate students of career fields of interest to AU students. The Part-Time Career Advisor presents workshops on career related topics and highlights Career Center online resources.

This position reports to the Director of Experiential Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Coaches and advises undergraduate and graduate students in career advising appointments focusing on career paths that integrate academic learning with professional goals. Advises students on all aspects of career development and job search, including interviewing, networking, and crafting job search materials appropriate to the student’s academic level.  Advises students and recent alumni with majors in the School of Public Affairs (SPA). Advisors are expected to combine a broad understanding of career advising techniques with current knowledge of job market trends relevant to their student population. Advising appointments are conducted both in-person and virtually.

  • Pre-law advising for students and alumni from all schools interested in applying to law school. The advisor will meet with students and alumni intending to apply to law school.   The advisor will review personal statements and other application materials as well as strategize the impact of LSAT scores and GPA as it relates to law school applications. The advisor will develop timelines for students to optimize their application cycles. The advisor is expected to possess knowledge of the law school application process and help guide students effectively with resources and tools provided by the Career Center. 

  • Collaborates with colleagues to present career resources and programs. Creates and presents live and virtual career and experiential education workshops targeting attendees ranging from incoming students to recent alumni.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Position may oversee the administrative work of one or more Federal Work Study (FWS) student employees.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-Time.

  • 20 - 25 hours per week.

  • This is a temporary part-time position.

Salary Range:

  • $35.00 - $40.00 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree or equivalent.

  • 2 or more years of progressive experience in a professional setting or advising role.

  • Knowledge of public affairs jobs in public, private and non-profit sectors.

  • Must have the ability to function in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Strong communication and listening skills.

  • Computer literacy including skills with Internet research tools and social media.

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, critical thinking, and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with students, employers, faculty, alumni, and other constituents.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree.

  • Previous experience advising college and/or university students.

  • Previous experience in a public affair setting (local or federal government, Capitol Hill, government affairs, public policy, etc.).

  • Familiarity with self-assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or Strong Interest Inventory.

  • Knowledge of law school application process or the legal profession.
