About the Department
An Apprentice Electrical Tester assists journey-level Electrical Testers in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and removal of electrical and electronic equipment in the electrical test laboratory, power plants, receiving stations, substations, transmission and distribution systems, while fulfilling the training and experience requirements of the Electrical Apprenticeship Standards of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the City of Pasadena.
IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate for the Apprentice Electrical Tester position possesses strong technical knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment used in utility settings, with experience in installation, testing, calibration, maintenance, and removal. They have a solid understanding of AC/DC theory, electronics, and safety procedures, along with the ability to solve mathematical problems using algebra and trigonometry.
This ideal candidate is a reliable team player who works well with others, takes direction effectively, and communicates clearly, while working directly with other journey level Electrical Testers. They are physically capable of performing demanding tasks, including lifting, climbing ladders, and working in various positions. Attention to detail, accurate record-keeping, and proficiency with tools and testing equipment are essential.
Position Duties

- An Apprentice Electrical Tester assists in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and removal of electrical and electronic equipment, for example, KW and KVAR hour revenue meters, protective relays, indicating and recording instruments, power transformers, power capacitors, power circuit breakers, and other utility related equipment.
- Assists in the acceptance and performance testing of new electrical and electronic equipment; assists in the investigation of customer complaints; assists in testing and related work on energized electrical conductors and equipment.
- Assists in the connection of portable graphic instruments such as ammeters and voltmeters to energized conductors; operates test equipment in the lab and field; works near equipment energized to 220,000 volts; works with AC and DC test voltages to 150,000 volts.
- Maintains records; may draw oil samples from electrical equipment for PCB and other tests; assists in the installation of residential and commercial billing meters; and performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or G.E.D
- (2) Two years of recent progressive experience working with electrical and electronic equipment and/or
- Successful completion of course work in algebra, trigonometry and basic electrical and electronic theory.
- Proof of required coursework and/or education—such as transcripts or a degree certificate—must be attached to the application at the time of submission. Applicable coursework includes studies in algebra, trigonometry, and basic electrical and electronic theory.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, written test, practical test and department-level interviews.

Probationary work test period is continuous throughout the period of apprenticeship.
Other Qualifications
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
An Apprentice Electrical Tester enters into a written 4-year Apprenticeship Agreement recognized by the State of California Department of Apprenticeship Standards, the I.B.E.W. and the City of Pasadena. Employees in this classification are required to attend job related classes sponsored by Los Angeles Trade Tech outside of normal work hours as outlined by the Apprenticeship Agreement.
An Apprentice Electrical Tester is subject to emergency call-outs 24 hours a day, and therefore must have a telephone.
Successful completion of CPR and First Aid Certification is required as a condition of continued employment per OSHA regulations.
Candidates for this classification must be at least 18 years of age.
