SUMMARY: 

The Adaptive Physical Education is responsible for providing students with adaptive physical education with an instructional program based on the individualized needs of each student.  The APE Teacher will work towards developing physical skills and abilities of students with disabilities by implementing a modified curriculum.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work as a member of a trans-disciplinary team for planning and implementing an adaptive physical education instruction.
  • Implement, develop and/or revise instructional and materials to correspond with each individual student’s individualized education plan.  
  • Ensure that student progress is being monitored based on academic and behavior needs.
  • Provide direct instruction and services to all students, in the area of physical education.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with parents, school personnel and other agency staff. 
  • Assist in identifying, developing and implementing appropriate use of resources to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all students.
  • Consult with the teachers, therapist, administration and school personnel to develop or modify specifically designed physical education programs.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, district and WSHV requirements in physical education.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment as well as an up to date inventory of the physical education.
  • Assist with additional responsibilities such as arrival and dismissal of students, and special events.  
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the school principal.  
  • Maintain a current list of agency required training and participate in additional training and superintendent conference days. 
  • Maintains proper safety standards at all times.
  • Under the direct supervision of the school principal, be able to carry out a program consistent with the philosophy and goals of the Wraparound Services of the Hudson Valley
  • Complies with the agency dress code, agency time and attendance procedures, and adheres to agency policies and procedures including Code of Conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Team player with the ability to lead and develop strong relationships with employees, students and their families.
  • Bachelor degree in physical education
  • Master degree in a related education field.   
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  •  NYS Physical Education Certification Required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.  The employee may be required to stand, walk, stop, kneel, crouch or crawl.   The employee must occasionally lift and/or move, up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds.
