The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) brings together more than four decades of innovative and life-saving research on vaccines and infectious diseases. As an organized research center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries. 

The CVD is seeking a Laboratory Research Manager to join our Applied Immunology Laboratory.

Primary Duties:

  • Provide the highest technical expertise, independently leading research projects involving measurement of immune responses.
  • Knowledge/expertise in immunological assays, including assay development, optimization, qualification, and validation, adhering to good laboratory practices, FDA, NIH, and ICH guidelines.
  • Develop, write, and implement SOPs, Assay Development, Qualification, and Validation Plans and Reports.
  • Design and execute experimental plans, ensuring alignment with project goals, timelines, and regulatory expectations.
  • Highly motivated, organized, and project-oriented individual who can manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize competing deadlines, and maintain clear, timely communication with cross functional teams and collaborators.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform rigorous quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) of experimental data, with the ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve assay-related issues or deviations.
  • Perform and oversee a range of laboratory techniques, including multiplex binding assays (Luminex and MSD, ELISA, tissue culture, and functional assays relevant for respiratory and enteric infections, cell isolation, cell culture and flow cytometry.
  • Train, mentor, and guide lab technicians and junior staff.
  • Provide oversight for safety, compliance, and research standards. 
  • Contribute to lab meetings. strategy sessions, and scientific discussions to support innovation and continuous improvement. 

Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience working in a research laboratory setting that includes four (4) years in the relevant research specialization.

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

Certification/Licensure: NA

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

May include working in biohazardous/select agents and/or in Biosafety Level-3 Laboratories (ABSL-3) which require successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $93,000 - $105,000, commensurate with education and experience.
