Position Summary:
The Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA) will work primarily with the genetic counselors in the laboratory and clinics. They will be responsible for assisting genetic counselors with their workflow including triaging phone calls, helping with patient scheduling, following up with clients regarding testing logistics, and helping with preauthorization and utilization of laboratory tests. The GCA may also assist with data entry, special projects and other miscellaneous tasks as assigned. The assistant will need work independently but will report to the Laboratory Operations Manager.
The Genetic Counselor Assistant at HealthPartners will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide compassionate and personalized care for patients and their families throughout the genetic counseling and testing process. This includes assistance with medical record review, collection of family and pregnancy histories, provision of education and risk assessments, explanation of screening and diagnostic tools, review of genetic literature, coordination of additional testing and referrals, interpretation of results, and communication of results to the patient and the referring clinician. The GCA serves as a resource to the multidisciplinary team and assists in conferences, program committees, and educational activities for the care teams and staff.
Required Qualifications:
Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:
- Minimum 2 years post-high school education in a healthcare related field.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills
- Experience with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software programs
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, department administrative staff, interdepartmental contacts, and the public.
- Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.
- Ability to plan and organize the workflow in a busy office/unit environment and be self-directed and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to be flexible in response to changing demands.
- Ability to handle a high volume of work under pressure.
- Resourceful in problem solving, initiative and good judgment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred Qualifications:
Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:
- Bachelor’s degree in genetics, chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science or related field preferred.
- Coursework in genetics or experience with genetic testing or genetic specialty clinic preferred.
