The Marine Education Specialist role is responsible for teaching marine education (i.e., swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, paddle sports, etc.) and related training, such as CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard, and other relevant courses. Ensuring the safety, supervision, and administration of the marine education program in assigned region.
· Teach the fundamental marine education programming in accordance with identified/established curriculum, follow training standards established by third-party organizations (PADI/NAUI, American Red Cross, American Canoe Association, National Safe Boating Council, US Sailing, etc.),
· Teach related biology, physiology, health & nutrition, marine science, oceanography, and/or outdoor sport courses in accordance with local board-of-education curriculum standards for youth/young adults to earn high school credits,
· Maintain lesson plans for each area,
· Implement effective individualized instruction to meet the readiness and ability for each youth/young adult,
· Test youth/young adults’ knowledge and abilities through written and practical exams and certify youth/young adults in accordance with relevant certification guidelines,
· Effectively implement AMIkids Way (Kids First, Safety, and Family) and key elements of Positive Youth Development (Relationships, Meaningful Participation, Community Involvement, and Challenged & Engaged Programming) and the AMIkids Personal Growth Model (PGM) in all interactions with youth/young adults,
· Actively ensure all interactions reflect Kids First, Safety, Family, Relationships, Meaningful Participation, Challenge and Engaged environment and Community Involvement,
· Interactions with youth shall maintain an environment that provides a physically/emotionally safe space for youth/young adult and effective learning, growth, and progress toward individualized goals,
· Model supportive, consistent, respectful behavior with all parties to ensure an atmosphere that fosters healthy relationships, trust, and mutual respect; set clear boundaries and provide observations and reflection to youth/young adult,
· Maintain records of youth/young adults progress in certification and curriculum-based classes,
· Ensure compliance with AMIkids policies, internal quality management systems, and any applicable guidelines provided by contracts or third-party organizations that offer curriculum and certification,
· Create, review, and provide identified reports in accordance with the established schedule,
· Engage in activities that support the delivery of the marine education curriculum, (example- maintaining boats, SCUBA equipment, sailboats, and kayaks),
· Coordinate activities with the Director of Marine Education, and the Leader at the identified Program(s) (e.g., Executive Director/Principal, Program Manager/Director of Operations),
· Provide training and testing to Team Members and volunteers in accordance with relevant certification guidelines,
· Lead by role-modeling for students, volunteers, and other participants to further marine education at AMIkids,
· May drive for work-related tasks,
· Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
· Bachelor’s degree,
· Possess or ability to obtain State/District Educator Certificate,
· Minimum 2 years’ related experience (e.g., diving, aquatics instruction, sailing, boating),
· Current Dive Instructor certification required,
· Possess or ability to become a certified instructor – Lifeguard, Sailing, Boat Handling and Kayaking,
· Possess a boating license, USCG mariner credential a plus,
· Microsoft Office experience (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
