Stock/Delivery Clerks drive County-owned vehicles for the purpose of transporting materials to and from destinations related to County business or services. The General Services Agency Mailroom team is made up of three Stock/Delivery Clerks and a Storekeeper. This team coordinates mail pick-ups and drop-offs for the majority of County buildings and may perform general clerical tasks to support overall office functions.
Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.
Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).
Position Duties
- Collect and sort items along delivery route using carts as necessary;
- Verify that items are addressed correctly, marked with the proper postage, and in suitable condition for processing;
- Lift and unload containers of mail or parcels onto equipment for transportation to sortation stations;
- Remove containers of sorted mail or parcels and transfer them to designated areas according to established procedures;
- Sort and route incoming mail, and collect outgoing mail;
- Seal or open envelopes, by hand or by using machines;
- Collect, seal, and stamp outgoing mail, using postage meters and envelope sealers;
- Inspect metered mail machine output for defects and determine how to eliminate causes of any defects;
- Remove from machines printed materials, such as labeled articles, postmarked envelopes or tape, and folded sheets;
- Release packages or letters to customers upon presentation of written notices or other identification;
- Answer inquiries regarding shipping or mailing policies;
- Deliver messages and items, such as newspapers, documents, and packages, between establishment departments and to the Post Office;
- Unload and sort items collected along delivery routes;
- Plan and follow the most efficient routes for delivering goods;
- Check with home offices after completed deliveries to confirm deliveries and collections and to receive instructions for other deliveries;
- Perform general office or clerical work, such as filing materials, operating duplicating machines, or running errands; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Traffic rules, regulations, and laws;
- Basic mailroom operations; and
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Operate a motor vehicle with skill and safety;
- Work cooperatively with employees and the general public;
- Mindful of one’s own time and the time of others when meeting deadlines;
- Follow oral and written instructions;
- Work independently and exercise common sense and sound judgment in the performance of duties;
- Lift/carry supplies weighing a maximum of fifty (50) pounds;
- Read, write, and speak effectively; and
- Talk to others to convey information effectively.
- Graduation from high school or passage of the high school level General Education Development (GED) test.
- Six (6) months' full-time experience making pick-ups and deliveries; OR
- Six (6) months' full-time experience sorting mail
Other Qualifications
- Application Review and Screening. Applications are carefully screened based on information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on.
- Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
- Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
- Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
