This is a temporary position expected to last through Spring 2026. 

GENERAL STATEMENT 

The Student Copy Editor is responsible for editing and the correction of content supplied by editors, staff, and contributing writers for in print and online publication. The Student Copy Editor checks content for errors, whether they be factual or grammatical, and for fabrication.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  1. The Student Copy Editor is responsible for returning edited content to editors in a timely manner for in print and online publication. 
  2. Responsible for identifying and correcting punctuation, grammatical, citation and factual errors in any received content. 
  3. Responsible for providing final edits to the already edited content provided by page section editors.
  4. Responsible for reviewing, researching, and identifying plagiarism and fabricated details as well as reporting it to the Student Managing Editor and Student Editor-in-Chief if found. 
  5. Responsible for having working knowledge of grammar rules and the AP Style Guide and 22 West Media Style Guide.
  6. Attend at all department and company meetings, as well as participate in company events.
  7. Attend the biweekly staff meeting.
  8. Prepare any report for the 22 West Student Leads meeting.
  9. Other duties as needed. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

Education and Experience 

Must have at least one year of journalism-related or copy-editing experience and be enrolled in related discipline (Journalism, Communications, English, etc.). Requires above average expertise and experience in AP style and journalistic writing, including feature and news style format.  

Involvement 22 West Magazine the previous year preferred, but not required. Must be concurrently enrolled at CSULB in six or more undergraduate units (3 or more graduate units) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.   

Knowledge and Abilities 

Must be an excellent copy editor who also has a basic understanding of the intricacies and legalities of publishing such as grammar, punctuation, writing technique/ styles, slander, libel etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit at a desk or computer workstation and use hands and fingers to key data, sort documents, and file paperwork. The employee is frequently required to stand and be able to talk or hear in interactions with others. The employee is occasionally required to walk to other offices within the building and around the campus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
