The Microsoft 365 (M365) Engineer is responsible for overseeing vendor led migration activities, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and internal requirements. The role partners day to day with the appointed third party migration vendor to monitor and assure the execution of migration runbooks, validate quality and compliance, and provide internal technical support where required. The engineer acts as the primary internal point of contact for governance, risk management and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that migrations across OneDrive, OneNote, SharePoint Online, Exchange, Microsoft Teams, Power Platform (Power Apps/Automate) and Power BI are delivered safely, securely and with minimal business disruption.
Here’s what the role looks like:
- Own technical delivery for cross tenant migrations covering OneDrive, OneNote, SharePoint Online, Exchange, Teams, Power Apps/Automate and Power BI, working day to day with the third party migration vendor.
- Oversee vendor led migration activities: monitor execution of runbooks and playbooks, validate cutover plans, track progress and quality, and ensure RAID (risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies) and status reporting meet internal governance and stakeholder requirements.
- Engineer for quality and repeatability: script assessments, pre checks and post move validation to secure data, permissions and link integrity.
- User readiness and hyper care: provide input to pilots, communications, floor walking and adoption materials; set expectations where content types have migration limitations; track and resolve defects.
- Governance, security & compliance: align migrations to Entra ID policies, DLP/retention and information protection; ensure audit readiness with complete evidence packs.
- Documentation & handover: produce operational documentation, known issues and support playbooks; complete acceptance into BAU against defined criteria.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and deliver tailored solutions.
- Stay current with Microsoft 365 developments and advise on best practices and innovations.
Requirements
- Proven experience in Microsoft 365 engineering, ideally within the oil and gas or similarly regulated industries.
- Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 architecture, administration, and security.
- Experience with hybrid environments and integration with on premises infrastructure.
- Proven enterprise scale tenant to tenant migration delivery across OneDrive, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams, Power Apps/Automate and Power BI, including clear understanding of what migrates and where remediation is required.
- Vendor delivery leadership: confident in running SoW/RACI execution, daily stand ups, evidence based acceptance and hyper care exit.
Preferred
- Tooling breadth: familiarity with Microsoft native cross tenant capabilities and third party tools
- M&A / integration background: prior work on multi phase BU migrations and complex dependency management.
- Voice/meeting rooms exposure during tenant transitions.
- Regional compliance awareness (e.g., works council constraints for collaboration tools/recordings).
- Relevant Microsoft certifications
