About the Department

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this position is to provide counseling, technical assistance, represents and advocates for veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their dependents, and survivors in obtaining benefits to which they are entitled to under Federal, state or local laws. Duties include but not limited to: assisting veterans and their dependents in applying for available federal benefits by initiating or reopening claims; appealing denied claims to the local Veteran Affairs (VA) Regional Office, or the Board of Veterans Appeals in Washington, D.C.; assisting veterans in applying for available state benefits from the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs; and performing additional duties as assigned by the Veterans Services Officer.

Under general supervision, this position advises and assists veterans or dependents in presenting disability, insurance, pension, and other claims for benefits under Federal, State or local laws. Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting veterans, reviewing legislation and regulations, preparing claims, assembling evidence, and performing other duties as assigned.

Other Qualifications

The equivalent of a high school diploma or GED; with three (3) years veteran's claims review and appeals work in Veterans Affairs; and previous military experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be accredited by the General Counsel of the Veterans' Administration within six (6) months date of hire. 

Must attend Annual Service Officers Training (SOTS) and pass exam administered by the Tennessee Department of Veteran's Affairs is required to maintain position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.
