WORK LOCATION: Comal and Kendall Counties, Texas
SUMMARY
The Operator – Collections/Distribution is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the pumping equipment, storage facilities, tools and equipment, collection and distribution networks, and water and wastewater treatment facilities within the Western Canyon Division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain knowledge of the Authority's mission and policies as they relate to the Western Canyon Division.
- Perform organizational maintenance and general repair work, under the direction of the Chief Operator including; to the distribution and collection systems, pumping equipment, storage facilities, rolling stock (including heavy equipment) and small tools and equipment.
- Use of iPad, laptop, and/or desktop computer for record keeping, documentation, and workflow.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
- Respond to emergencies and work extended shifts as necessary.
- Respond and complete customer sewer inspections.
- Perform building and grounds maintenance at all stations and the stock building.
- Maintain an inventory of all tools and equipment under the direction of the Chief Operator.
- Report any significant problems or activities to the Chief Operator.
- Assist in preparation for emergency operations.
- Become well versed and assist the Chief Operator with the maintenance records of the many facilities throughout the Western Canyon Division.
- Clean and organize the service vehicles as required but not less than once per week.
- Assist the Chief Operator in performing routine duties such as meter installations and replacements, leak repair, exercising of valves, flushing waterlines, collection system maintenance and repairs, and operating the pump stations and wastewater treatment plant.
- Safeguard all facilities and property.
- Respond courteously to customers to answer questions or resolve customer complaints.
- Monitor the SCADA system to identify problems and check status; report any problems to the Chief Operator or Water Treatment Plant Chief Operator.
- Perform rough fabrication, painting, general carpentry, and other repair work as needed.
- Accessible during off duty hours and on-call on a rotating schedule as instructed by the Chief Operator.
- Assist plant operations when needed to include weekend ops for water and wastewater facilities.
- Collect samples and check disinfectant residuals.
- Perform all work in a safe and thoughtful manner. Follow all requirements of the GBRA Safety Manual; notify a supervisor immediately in case of an accident.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Work weekends and nights when needed and respond with minimal delay to callouts and emergencies.
- Operate gas, electric, hydraulic, and hand tools with both hands.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel).
- Ability to operate Sewer Vac/Jetter equipment and closed-circuit camera equipment.
- Ability to plan work and travel route to be efficient in daily tasks.
- Ability to employ sound judgment. Think and communicate coherently and logically.
- Work in a team environment adhering to GBRA's Mission and Vision statements.
- Ability to train others on the job.
- Read and understand highly technical information in small print (such as Safety Data Sheets and wastewater discharge permits).
- Skill in documenting issues and incidents.
- Skill in presenting data to provide timely information to management.
- Permanent residence must be such that roadway travel time from home to reporting station takes no more than 45 minutes. This response time must be achieved without violating traffic laws.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED.
REGISTRATIONS/LICENSES
- Acceptable M.V.R.
- Must possess either “D” Water Treatment or “D” Wastewater Treatment license within six (6) months.
- Must possess both “C” Ground Water Treatment and “C” Wastewater Treatment license within twenty-four (24) months.
- Attain a “CSI” (Customer Service Inspector) License from TCEQ within two (2) years of employment.
EXPERIENCE
None required but some experience in a utility, service or construction work is desirable.

Climb up and down vertical ladders up to 20 feet in height. Repeatedly lift, load, and unload up to 50 pounds. Safely maneuver manhole lids and other heavy objects weighing up to 200 lbs. Respond to visual and audible alarms. Wear personal protection equipment as outlined in the employee Safety Manual such as a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Enter and work in confined spaces, as defined by OSHA. Perform basic first aid and CPR.
Employees must wear protective footwear in compliance with ANSI or ASTM standard. New employees are provided footwear in compliance with ANSI or ASTM standard. Replacement footwear is provided annually for qualifying employees.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Eighty (80) percent indoor and twenty (20) percent outdoors. Some dirty duties but generally work can be performed in a clean and well-organized environment. Works with municipal wastewater and bio solids. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals and possible disease-causing bacteria.?
