Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Department of Resident Life serves a highly diverse population of approximately 12,500 students living in traditional residence halls, apartments, and suites, including some public/private partnership apartment communities. Approximately 46% of all resident students are enrolled in twelve living-learning programs that cover a wide array of academic areas. Resident Life employs a diverse workforce of 88 full-time and graduate staff members and about 600 undergraduate student staff members. The Department values respectful, equitable, and inclusive practices. It actively seeks candidates who can represent and serve the diversity of persons who live and work in the University of Maryland’s residence halls. The University of Maryland campus is located in the greater Washington, DC, metro area, just eight miles from downtown DC and 30 miles from Baltimore, MD. As a member of the Residential Engagement Programs (REP) team in the Engagement, Services, and Program unit, the Coordinator for Outreach Programs provides leadership and support for programs, services, and initiatives focused on promoting of the Department of Resident Life’s mission, services, and programs, as well as collaborations with other departments.

The Coordinator oversees departmental participation in signature admissions and orientation events, manages the model tour room, and coordinates poster and inventory management and distribution. In addition, the Coordinator selects, supervises, and evaluates approximately 12 undergraduate Program Assistants, who provide office coverage and program support to the unit and the department. The Coordinator also oversees the Terp Welcome Crew, a group of volunteer students who assist with move-in activities each fall. This includes recruitment, training, and on-site management. Additionally, the Coordinator maintains a working knowledge of and contributes to all functions of the Residential Engagement Programs staff group, including major programs such as Fall Welcome, Winter Welcome, Find your Squad, and Terp Tracks; our residential curriculum. The Coordinator carries out their duties in an environment characterized by a diverse staff and student population, actively leading and modeling practices that foster equity and inclusion.

Preferences:
*A Master's degree in Student Affairs/Personnel Administration, Educational Administration, or a related field and a minimum of two years full-time work experience in residence life, programming, event planning, admissions, and/or orientation within a university setting is strongly preferred.
* Well-developed administrative and organizational skills.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, and an understanding of effective customer service.
* Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships within a university setting.
* Candidates must also be able to work occasional night and weekend hours.
* Successful candidates must actively demonstrate an appreciation for and promotion of inclusion in all areas of work.


Physical Demands:
Typical office environment – Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negotiable amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects—ability to travel around campus for meetings and to attend to duties.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

• Experience: One (1) year of professional administrative or coordinator experience.

• Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of best practices in organization, administration, and customer service.
• Knowledge of proper protocol in dealing with confidential information.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
• Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
