By completing this course in its entirety, you will be first in line to join our Cadet Program, which will guide you through the process of obtaining your Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit — a key step toward operating a bus and pursuing a career with RTD.

Position Duties
This 4-week program provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to the skills and knowledge required to become a successful Bus Operator.
Throughout the course, you will gain insight into:
- The daily responsibilities of a bus operator
- Safety procedures and customer service expectations
- The steps required to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Customer Service Expectations
Providing exceptional customer service is a core responsibility of every Bus Operator. As the public face of RTD, operators are expected to create a welcoming and safe environment for all passengers — including seniors, people with disabilities, students, and members of diverse communities.
During the training program, participants will receive instruction and guidance on:
- Professional Communication:
How to communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively with passengers, including those who may be frustrated, confused, or in crisis. - Conflict Resolution & De-escalation:
Techniques for managing difficult situations calmly and professionally, including how to defuse tense interactions and set clear boundaries when necessary. - Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity:
Understanding and respecting the diverse needs and backgrounds of the community we serve, while maintaining a nonjudgmental and inclusive approach. - Customer Assistance:
How to assist passengers with boarding, directions, fare questions, and ADA-related needs, while maintaining schedules and route responsibilities.
Program Schedule:
- Virtual sessions: 2 hours every Friday evening
- In-person sessions: 4-hour classes held on Saturdays
